FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mounties Stun Ship in opener – Shelly Forsburg strikes out seven

SHIPPENSBURG – Junior Shelly Forsburg (Vestal,NY/Vestal) scattered seven hits in a complete game and Erin Hackett’s (Elkland/Elkland) two-run single keyed a four run fourth inning to lead Mansfield to a 5-3 upset over Shippensburg in the opening game of a PSAC East doubleheader at Robb Field Sunday afternoon.

Forsburg was sharp all afternoon in earning her fifth win of the season striking out seven, including two batters in the seventh, and walking none. All three Shippensburg runs came in the third inning and all three were unearned.

Mansfield got on the scoreboard with a run in the third on an RBI double by Jess Christ (Dover/Dover).

Trailing 3-1, the Mountaineer got four runs in the top of the fourth on a two-run single by Hackett. Mansfield scored the final two runs on bases loaded walks by Chris and Jen Stein (Williamsport/Williamsport).

Christ was 2-3 with a double and two RBI while Forsburg helped her own cause by going 2-4 from the plate.

Shippensburg’s Lori Knopf held Mansfield to two hits, singles by Christ and Forsburg, and struck out seven in posting a 2-0 shutout in the nightcap. The Mountaineers loaded the bases with one out in the third but could not get a run across.

Forsburg had another strong effort on the mound in game two after relieving starter Lindsey Knapp in the first inning. Forsburg scattered four hits over the final 5.1 innings and struck out four. She did not allow an earned run.

Mansfield (6-25, 3-13 PSAC East) host Shippensburg (26-19, 9-9) in a conference doubleheader on Tuesday starting at 2:30 p.m. at Helen Lutes Field.
