FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MOUNTIE MEN PICKED FIFTH IN PSAC EAST PRESEASON POLL –
BRETT LONGPRE’ NAMED PRESEASON ALL-CONFERNECE – MOUNTIES OPEN 2002-2003 WITH
MANSFIELD UNIVERSITY/COMFORT INN TOURNAMENT
MANSFIELD
– The
Mansfield University men’s basketball team was picked to finish fifth in the
PSAC East preseason coaches’ poll. The poll was released this afternoon as
part of the PSAC Basketball Media Videoconference.
“Being
picked to finish fifth maybe good for this team,” fourth year head coach Vince
Alexander said. “Hopefully it will be a motivational factor. I really believe
we will finish much higher than fifth, but it’s not what I believe, it’s
what the players believe that counts.”
Brett
Longpre, a first team PSAC East selection last year, was one of six players
picked to the preseason all-conference team.
The
Mountaineers will open the 2002-2003 season this Friday and Saturday when they
host the Mansfield University/Comfort Inn Tip-off tournament at Decker
Gymnasium. Mansfield will play Longwood University in the nightcap on Friday
after New Jersey Institute of Technology plays Stonehill (MA) College.
Every
new season brings with it high goals and expectations. Every teams list making
the playoffs as there number one goal, but only the players and coaches really
know if it possible. For head coach Vince
Alexander, the 2002-2003 Mansfield men’s basketball team has all the
makings of a great playoff contender.
The
return of six players who started ten or more games last season along with four
other letterwinners give the Mountaineers an experienced team that will only be
better with a talented group of newcomers.
After
leading the PSAC East in scoring the last two seasons, expect more of the same
in 2002-2003. Coach Alexander’s up-tempo offense is ideally suited for this
athletic team.
High
expectations are warranted with the return of All-PSAC selection Brett
Longpre’, Jason Clayton, Jason Roscoe, Ian Connor, Kris Gibbs-Smith, Glenn
Jackson, Ian Anderson, Brian Bryant, Jason Mattern and
Jeremy Fry. Mix in transfer Robert Carter and freshman sensation Bill
McNeil and the Mountaineers look to be playing late into the month of March.
The
high octane engine of the Mountaineer offense led the PSAC East in scoring for
second straight year and returns six of top eight scorers from last season. Brett
Longpre’ led the Mountaineers in scoring for the second consecutive season
averaging 15.9 per game, good for 10th place in the PSAC. Longpre’,
who earned first-team All-PSAC East honors, also ranked among the conference
leaders in 3-point field goals and free throw percentage.
Senior
Jason Clayton will take over the
starting point guard position left open upon the graduation of Damar Lopez.
Clayton, who started 13 games last season, averaged 3.2 points per game, dished
out 2.4 assists per game and had a team high 36 steals.
Junior
Jason Roscoe returns to the
backcourt with Clayton and can play either guard spot. Roscoe averaged seven
points a game, handed out 2.8 assists a game and had 34 steals. Sophomore Kris
Gibbs-Smith adds his 6’6 frame to the perimeter, which will help Mansfield
keep its opponents 3-points in check. Smith averaged 5.6 points a game, grabbed
3.6 rebounds a game and had team leading 11 blocks in conference play. Senior Jason
Mattern and sophomores Jeremy Fry
and Brian Bryant will add depth at
the guard position along with newcomer Dave Hoopes.
The
person that may put the Mountaineers over the top is freshman guard Bill
McNeil. McNeil is a 2nd team All-Public guard out of Philadelphia
who was the MVP of Public League Basketball Championship tournament.
As
talented and deep as the Mountaineers are in the backcourt, the key to a
successful season may fall on the backs of the men in the paint.
Junior Ian Connor returns his
8.3 points and 4.0 rebounds a game as well as his 58% field goal percentage --5th
best in the PSAC last year. Junior Glen
Jackson made his presence known with his team leading 24 blocks. Jackson
also averaged 4.2 points and rebounds per game.
Junior forward Robert Carter
will make an immediate contribution on the inside after transferring from
Millersville where he was a starter last season. Carter can score, rebound and
plays strong defense. Sophomore Ian Anderson will contribute minutes
coming off the bench.
