FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:  Mansfield improves to 2-0 on season with 81-74 win over UDC – Carr’s 23 points leads four Mountaineers in double figures

MANSFIELD – Yuseff Carr went 10-10 from the floor to top four Mountaineers in double figures with 23 points and lead Mansfield to a 81-74 win over the District of Columbia in a non-conference game at Decker Gymnasium  Tuesday night.

“Yuseff played another really nice game and we did a good job inside,” said head coach Rich Miller. “It got a little close at the end, but it’s good to go into Thanksgiving at 2-0 against two good Division II teams.”

Mansfield jumped out to an early 17-6 lead, largely by hitting four 3-pointers in the first five minutes of the game. But UDC rallied, claiming their only lead of the game at 24-23 on a layup by Chris Leach with 7:29 to go in the half.

A Chris Pender 3-pointer game Mansfield the lead back and the Mountaineer took a 39-36 lead into halftime.

The game remained close through the first eight minutes of the second half before Tony Fannick and Carr keyed a 17-5 run to give Mansfield a 70-55 lead on a jumper by freshman Breland Roach with 5:06 to play.

But UDC hung tough, cutting the gap to 77-74 with 1:18 remaining before a Fannick layup ended the run.

In addition to his 23 points, Carr grabbed eight rebounds and blocked three shots. Fannick added 21 points and pulled down nine boards while dishing out five assists and blocking two shots. Justin Simmons scored 15 points while Ryan Callahan added 14 points.

Nigel Munson led UDC (0-4) with 26 points followed by Keith Brooks with 16 points and Kenneth James with 14.

Mansfield host Penn State-Dubois on Monday.
