MANSFIELD – Mercyhurst rallied from 13 points down midway through the second half to upset Mansfield 90-87 in a PSAC crossover contest Monday night in Decker Gymnasium. It was the first loss in five games this season for Mansfield.

Mansfield led for much of the game taking a 25-14 lead on a jumper by Chris Pender midway through the first half and led by as many 18 points on a pair of free throws by Ryan Callahan before Mercyhurst cut the lead to 45-30 at halftime on a heave at the buzzer by Nnamdi Nnadili.

With 10 minutes to play, and the Mountaineers leading 61-49, Mansfield big man Yuseff Carr picked up his fourth foul and left the game followed by forward Tony Fannick picking up his fourth foul two minutes later.

That seemed to change the tone of the game with Mercyhurst going on a torrid shooting spree taking a 65-63 lead on a 3-pointer by Elliot Engelmann with 6:04 remaining. Mercyhurst, which went on a 24-2 run, continued to build the lead to 74-65 on a jumper by Engelmann with just under four minutes to play.

Mansfield rallied to cut the lead to 77-75 on a 3-pointer by Ryan Callahan with 1:47 to play and closed to 78-77 thirty seconds later on a pair of Carr free throws. After a pair of free throws by Mercyhurst’s Heiden Ratner gave the Lakers a three point lead, Carr closed it to 80-79 with another pair of free throws.

Mercyhurst (4-2) went to the line and led 88-83 with nine seconds left but Mansfield closed to 88-87 on a 3-pointer by Callahan with two seconds left.

In all 61 personal fouls were called in the game with Mercyhurst connecting on 34-46 free throws to Mansfield’s 29-39.

Callahan scored a game-high 24 points connecting on 7-8 from the floor while Fannick had 19 points and Carr and Justin Simmons 13 each.

Ratner topped five Mercyhurst players in double figures with 15 points followed by Shelton Jackson with 14.
