FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mansfield men fall at Kutztown 81-69 – MU’s Ryan Callahan scores 1,000 career point

KUTZTOWN – Mansfield’s Ryan Callahan scored 18 points including his 1,000 career point but it wouldn’t be enough to overcome a 37-point effort by Kutztown Stephen Dennis as Mansfield dropped an 81-69 PSAC East decision at Keystone Hall Thursday night.

The game was played Thursday night after a series of snowstorms in the Kutztown area postponed the game from Wednesday.

Mansfield led early but Kutztown controlled much of the first half before taking a 35-27 lead into halftime.

Kutztown held a 44-34 lead after the first four minutes of the second half but the Mountaineers went on a 17-5 run to cut the lead to 51-49 on a pair of free throws by Tony Fannick with just under 10 minutes to play.

Kutztown used a 16-4 run of its own to take a 67-53 advantage on a layup by Ryan Washington with 6:40 to go before the Mountaineers one again closed to 72-67 on a layup by Justin Simmons with 1:19 to play but could pull no closer.

Callahan scored his 1,000 point on a layup with 3:42 to play to cut Kutztown’s lead to 70-61.

Freshman Cory Henneghan tied his season-high with 16 points, 12 of which came off four 3-pointers. Fannick had nine points while Yuseff Carr added eight points and 10 rebounds.

Dennis connected on 14-of-21 shots and 9-14 free throws to accumulate his 37 points while Ryan Washington recorded a double-double with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Tamir Johnson also had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.

Mansfield held a 46-36 rebounding advantage including 19-5 on the offensive end but Kutztown converted 26-of-37 free throw attempts to Mansfield 9-of-13.

The two teams split the regular season series after Mansfield beat then No. 2 ranked Kutztown 94-87 in Decker Gymnasium last month.

Also tonight Bloomsburg edged No. 12 East Stroudsburg 59-57 on the road. East Stroudsburg and Cheyney are both tied at the top of the PSAC East with 6-2 conference marks followed by Mansfield at 5-3 and Kutztown at 4-3.

Mansfield travels to Cheyney on Saturday.
