Box Score

MANSFIELD – Yuseff Carr scored 26 points and Ryan Callahan scored 20 to lead Mansfield to a 79-68 win over West Chester in a key PSAC East game Saturday afternoon at Decker Gymnasium.

The win moves Mansfield (9-7, 2-2 PSAC East) to one game back in the PSAC East behind West Chester, Kutztown and Cheyney.

“It’s a little bit of an understatement to say that was a good win for us,” said head coach Rich Miller. “We really played unselfishly out there today as a team. We played well defensively and got a good offensive spark from Ryan Callahan in the first and Yuseff Carr in the second half.”

Mansfield never trailed in the game in handing West Chester its first conference loss of the season. Callahan, who had 14 points in the first half, scored the first basket of the game and Mansfield expanded its lead to 21-7 just over seven minutes into the first half.

The Mountaineers maintained a double-digit lead for the remainder of the half before taking a 37-25 advantage at intermission. In addition to Callahan’s impressive 14 point first half performance, Carr added 12 points.

West Chester closed the gap slightly, pulling to 57-49 with 8:42 to play but Mansfield answered with a 9-2 run to take a 66-51 lead with five minutes to play.

West Chester wouldn’t go down quietly using a pressing, pressure defense to cut the lead to 71-64 with 1:18 to play but Mansfield hung on for its second conference win in four games.

Mansfield limited West Chester to just 31.5% shooting from the floor while connecting on 55.6% of their own shots. Mansfield attempted a season low eight 3-pointers but blocked a season-high nine shots in the game.

Beside his game-high 26 points, Carr had a monster day pulling down five rebounds while blocking four shots. Callahan had one of his best all-around games of the year scoring 20 points while pulling down eight rebounds with two assists. Chris Pender scored a quiet 11 points but also blocked three shots.

West Chester was led by Ralph Hegamin who recorded a double-double with 26 points and 18 rebounds. Sam Scott scored 14 points.
