FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mansfield men roll over Penn College 116-54 – Mountaineers improve to 2-1 on the season

Boxscore

MANSFIELD – Donny Lyons come off the bench to score a game-high 18 points and four other Mountaineers scored in double figures as Mansfield rolled over Penn College 116-54 Thursday evening at Decker Gymnasium.

“It was a good game for us after such a long break,” said head coach Rich Miller. “We shot the ball well, especially the 3’s. We had a chance to look at lot of our guys in game situations that we really haven’t had in the first couple of games and for the most part they did pretty well.”

Mansfield hadn’t played since suffering a 80-62 loss at NCAA Division I Binghamton on Nov. 17 but the Mountaineers showed little signs of rust after the 17-day layoff.

Mansfield jumped out to a 15-6 lead when Chris Pender hit a layup five minutes into the game and continued a torrid offense pace taking a 55-24 lead into halftime.

The Mountaineers used the long ball for much of their offense connecting on 15-33 (45.5%) of their 3-point attempts in the game.

13 of 14 players scored for Mansfield with 46 points coming from the bench including Lyons game-high 18-point effort.

Chris Pender scored 17 points hitting 6-8 from the floor including 4-6 on 3-point attempts. Ryan Callahan, the Mountaineers leading scoring coming into the game, also came off the bench to score 16 points while sophomore Yuseff Carr recorded his first career double-double with 12 points and a game high 10 rebounds. Dom Oliver also scored 12 points.

Leroy Joiner led Penn College (4-4) with 12 points and Greg Solyak added 10 points.

It was the most points scored by a Mountaineer team since a 122-117 double-overtime loss at Bowie State in the 2006-07 season.

Mansfield improves to 2-1 on the season and travels to Seton Hill this Saturday.
