FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mansfield outlast UDC 85-82 in OT – Hill back on track with 24 points

MANSFIELD – John Hampton and Chris Greene both hit three free throws in overtime to lead Mansfield to an 85-82 win over the University of the District of Columbia in a hard-fought non-conference game at Decker Gymnasium Wednesday night.

“We needed a win,” said head coach Rich Miller who’s Mountaineers had lost four of their last six games after winning nine of their first contests of the season. “It wasn’t very pretty toward the end but we played hard. We got very good efforts from John (Hampton), Chris (Greene), Yuseff (Carr) and Brandon (Lawley) and it was really nice to see Kevin (Hill) get his stroke back.”

Hill, who had hit just one of his last 12 3-point shots coming into the game,  was lights out in the first half scoring 18 of his team-high 24 points including 4 of 6 three-pointers giving Mansfield a 44-38 halftime advantage.

Mansfield led 62-52 on Chris Greene layup seven minutes into the second half, but the Mountaineers wouldn’t hit another field goal for six minutes until Yuseff Carr’s layup broke a 65-65 deadlock with 6:54 to go.

UDC took its first lead of the game when Charlie Smallwoods layup gave the Firebirds a 72-71 advantage two minutes later.

Brandon Lawley hit two free throws to  give Mansfield a 77-76 lead with 1:39 left UDC tied the score to send the game into overtime.

Nine of Greene’s 17 points came from the free throw line with Carr scoring 13 points. Hampton added 10 points and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds.

Justin Walker led UDC with a game-high 34 points.

It marked the last non-conference game of the season for the Mountaineers who host Cheyney in a key PSAC matchup on Saturday.
