FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mounties use balanced attack to beat Messiah 85-63 – five players in double figures as Mansfield opens season at 3-0

MANSFIELD – Chris Pender scored a game and career high 16 points to pace five Mountaineers in double figures as Mansfield downed Messiah 85-63 in a non-conference men’s basketball game Monday night at Decker Gymnasium.

“We were able to get it inside tonight and that made the biggest difference in the game,” said head coach Rich Miller. “We got a good game out of Yuseff Carr and Brandon Lawley and that’s just going to help us in the future.”

Mansfield never trailed in the game building a 19-5 lead over the first seven minutes of the game before taking a 46-35 lead into halftime.

Lawley scored all 11 of his points in first half, hitting all five of his attempts from the field while pulling down five rebounds.

The Mountaineer maintained their double-digit lead throughout the second half while rotating players into the game.

Kevin Hill scored 14 points hitting four 3-pointers while freshman Yuseff Carr had a season high 12 points and five rebounds. Lawley and Ryan Callahan each scored 11 points.

“I thought Seth Cornell had a nice game tonight,” said Miller. “He had eight points with six assists and really looked comfortable out there.”

Jamie Yoder led Messiah (1-2) with 14 points while Colton Reitz added 12 points.

Mansfield is 3-0 on the season an host Seton Hill in an early season rematch on Monday night.
