FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Hill’s 3-pointer gives Mansfield 83-81 overtime win over East Stroudsburg

MANSFIELD – Kevin Hill hit a 3-pointer with 1.6 left in overtime to lift Mansfield to a 83-81 win over East Stroudsburg in a key PSAC East game at Decker Gymnasium Wednesday night.

“If there was a must win that was it,” said head coach Rich Miller as the Mountaineers snapped a three-game losing streak with their first conference win of the season. “We ran the play we wanted at the end and when you get in those situations you look for your go-to guys and tonight that was Kevin and John (Hampton).”

Mansfield led 37-36 at halftime and 45-40 three minutes into the second half before East Stroudsburg went on a 20-5 run to take a 60-50 lean on a Josh Wentz layup with eleven minutes to play.

The Mountaineers still trailed by three points with just over a minute left in regulation when John Hampton hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 71-71.

Mansfield took a 73-71 advantage on a pair of Hampton free throws before ESU tied the game on a jumper by Andy Heimback with :29 left and neither team scored to send the game into overtime.

East Stroudsburg scored the first five points in overtime and held a 80-75 lead at the 1:27 mark before Ryan Callahan hit two free throws and Hill buried a 3-pointer with :46 to go to pull to 81-80.

After a missed ESU shot with ten second left and Hill hit the game-winning 3-pointer off an assist from  Hampton to win the game.

Hampton scored a game-high 23 points with Hill adding 17 points including 4-7 on 3-point attempts. Brandon Lawley and Ryan Callahan each scored 10 points with with Lawley pulling down eight rebounds and dishing out four assists.

Josh Wentz and Chris Bach eached scored 17 points for ESU (13-5, 2-2)

Mansfield host West Chester on Saturday.
