FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: California pulls away in final five minutes in 80-71 win over Mansfield

MANSFIELD – California pulled away from Mansfield in the final five minutes of the game in a 80-71 win in a PSAC crossover contest Saturday afternoon at Decker Gymnasium.

The game was a battle between once defeated Mansfield and twice beaten California and was a tight game until the final minutes.

California (8-2) took a 29-19 lead 12 minutes into the game before Mansfield came storming back to close the gap to 36-35 on a free throw by Yuseff Carr with 1:35 to go in the first half.

Mansfield (9-2) still trailed by a point at 53-52 on a layup by Carr with 10:37 to play and trailed 62-58 on a jumper by Carr with just under five minutes left in the game but the Mountaineers could pull no closer.

California held a 39-22 rebounding advantage and hit 24 free throws to Mansfield’s 11. It was the first home loss for the Mountaineers in eight games this season.

Chris Greene led the Mountaineers with 19 points and seven assists with Chris Pender scoring 15 points and John Hampton 12.

Ron Banks  had a double-double with 25 points and 11 rebounds to lead for Cal players in double-figures.

Mansfield starts a five game road trip when it travels to Penn State-DuBois on Wednesday evening.
