Game Statistics

MANSFIELD – Senior John Hampton led five Mountaineers in double-figures with a game-high 21 points and keyed a second half rally to lead Mansfield to a 85-70 win over Bowie Stated in a non-conference game at Decker Gymnasium Friday night.

“I have to admit that was a good win for us,” said a reluctant but smiling head coach Rich Miller after the game. “We had a lot of guys step up tonight, but nobody as big as John Hampton.”

Mansfield led after the first five minutes build the lead to 26-14 on a pair of free throws by Cory Boone at the 8:51 mark. Bowie would go on a 13-3 run over the next two minutes to pull to 29-27 on a 3-pointer by Christian Jackson.

The lead would switch back and forth for the next five minutes before a jumper by Jason Ingram gave Bowie a 45-41 lead with 12 seconds left in the half.

Mansfield’s Lavil Owens hit a jumper with a second left before intermission to give Bowie State a 45-43 halftime advantage.

Bowie maintained its lead for the first nine minutes of the second half until a Hampton jumper put Mansfield back in the lead at 55-54.

Hampton’s jumper keyed a 23-4 run over a seven minute span taking a game high 76-58 lead on a layup by Brandon Lawley with 3:32 to play in the game. Hampton scored 12 of his points during the run.

“It’s good to see John getting back to his old self,” said Miller about his senior guard who missed much of the preseason. “John a key member of this team and when he plays well, we usually play well.”

Chris Greene scored 10 of his 12 points in the first half while Lawley had 11 points and Chris Pender and Ryan Callahan 10 each. Pender just missed a double-double with nine rebounds.

Carlos Williams led Bowie (5-4) with 17 points while Joshua Johnson recorded a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

It marks the best season start for the Mountaineers since going 9-1 in 2004. Mansfield will be off for two weeks before hosting California (PA) on Jan. 5.
