FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mounties falter in second half in 69-58 setback at Pitt-Johnstown – UPJ rallies after trailing by 15 points at halftime

JOHNSTOWN – Mansfield held a 15-point halftime lead but Chris Gilliam scored 12 of his game-high 18 points in the second half to rally Pitt-Johnstown to a 69-58 win over Mansfield in a non-conference Monday night at the Sports Center.

The game was originally scheduled for last Wednesday but was postponed by a snow storm.

The Mountaineers shot out to a 41-26 halftime lead behind junior Kevin Hill who scored 11 of his 14 points in the first half.

Mansfield continued to play well early in the second half building a 47-29 lead on a Chris Greene layup and free throw three minutes into the half.

But the Mountaineers would go stone-cold from the floor, not hitting another field goal for almost seven minutes as Pitt-Johnstown cut the lead to 48-41.

Mansfield still held onto the lead with five minutes to go but was outscored 15-3 for the remainder of the game in falling to 9-15.

The Mountaineer scored just 17 second-half points, their lowest of the season, while shooting 24% from the floor over the last 20 minutes of the game.

Kevin Hill led Mansfield with 14 points including four 3-pointers while freshman Jovoun Webb came off the bench to score 10. John Hampton and Brandon Lawley had eight points each.

In addition to Gilliam’s 18 points, Dwight Hines and William Sharpe each scored 11 points for Pitt-Johnstown (19-7).

Mansfield is tied for the fourth and final playoff spot in PSAC East and host East Stroudsburg in a key contest Wednesday night in Decker Gym.
