FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mounties Use Balanced Effort to Beat IUP 68-54 – Chris Pender Tops Four Players in Double Figures with 14 points

MANSFIELD – Redshirt freshman Chris Pender topped four players in double figures with a season best 14 points to help lead Mansfield to a 68-54 win over IUP in a PSAC crossover contest at Decker Gymnasium Sunday afternoon.

“It was certainly a good and our guys worked very hard to get it,” said head coach Rich Miller. “Everybody played a key role in the win today. I’s not often that everyone goes into a game understanding what role they personally have to play in order for us to be successful as a team, but that was the case today. Chris Pender and Dhimitri Luarasi stepped up and had big games offensively but everyone stepped up defensively.”

The Mountaineers, who never trailed after the first two minutes of the game, held IUP to just 21 first half points in taking a 31-21 lead into halftime. Pender scored eight of his points hitting 2-of-4 three-point attempts while sophomore point Chris Greene hit two 3-pointers in the last minute of the half to extend Mansfield lead from four to 10 points.

IUP managed to cut the lead to 35-32 seven minutes into the second half, but the Mountaineers responded 16-3 run over the next five minutes to put the game out of reach.

Mansfield shot 45.5% from the floor, including 48% on 3-point attempts, while holding IUP to 33.3% from the floor.

Chris Greene scored 13 points while three assists while Luarasi had a season best 12 points and six rebounds. Brandon Lawley scored 10 points with Terrance Williams and John Hampton eight. Hampton also had four assists and four steals.

Gerald Brooks led IUP (2-2) with a game high 17 points while Allen Deep was the only other player in double figures with 12 points.

IUP’s 54 points were the least points scored by an opponent since the Mountaineers beat West Chester 53-50 in 2005.

Mansfield improves to 2-3 overall and travel to Bowie State next Saturday.
