FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mountie Men Stun Cheyney 81-71 – Hampton and Williams Lead Four Mounties in Double Figures

CHEYNEY – John Hampton scored a game high 23 points and Terrance Williams added 17 points to lead Mansfield to a stunning 81-71 win over Cheyney in a PSAC East contest at Cope Hall Saturday afternoon.

“To get a win at Cheyney is always a big,” said head coach Rich Miller. “Everybody did a nice job today. John (Hampton) and Terrance (Williams) scored most of the points but everyone played well and that’s really been the key to our recent success.”

Mansfield has now won four straight after starting the season at 2-10 and are in second place in the PSAC East with a 2-1 mark. It also marked the first road win of the season for the Mountaineers who were 0-7 on the year away from Decker Gymnasium. It marked just the third win in the last 10 years at Cheyney’s Cope Hall.

The Mountaineers lead early before Cheyney rallied to tie the score at 22-22 with just over six minutes remaining in the first half. But Mansfield staged a rally of its own taking a 27-22 lead on a layup by freshman Brandon Smith a minute later and took a 36-32 advantage into intermission with Williams scoring 10 of his 17 points over the first 20 minutes.

Cheyney went on a 9-2 run taking a 41-38 lead just over two minutes into the second half but Mansfield responded with a 16-5 run of its own to take a 54-46 lead on a 3-pointer by Hampton at the 10:52 mark.

Cheyney cut the lead to71-67 with 1:35 left but Kevin Hill hit a 3-pointer seconds later and the Mountaineers would hit 3-4 free throws over the final thirty seconds to ice the game.

In addition to Hampton and Williams, Kevin Hill and Chris Pender each scored 11 points for Mansfield.

Michael Fryer had a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead Cheyney (9-9, 2-1).

Mansfield, which is tied with Cheyney for second place in the PSAC East behind idle Millersville (2-0), will host Pitt-Johnstown in a non-conference game this Wednesday night at Decker Gym.
