FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mounties Drop Double Overtime Thriller to Bowie State 122-117 – Kevin Hill Scores Career High 31 Points

BOWIE, MD – Mansfield’s Kevin Hill scored a career high 31 points but Gil Goodrich scored nine of his school record 52 points in the second overtime, including the Bulldogs last seven points of the game, to lead Bowie State to a 122-117 win over Mansfield in a wild shootout at A.C. Jordan Arena Saturday afternoon.

“It was a great effort by our guys,” said head coach Rich Miller. “They couldn’t have played harder. We put ourselves in position to win the game at the end of regulation and again at the end of the first overtime but the shots just didn’t fall.”

The pace of the game was frantic from the outset with Bowie State (5-1) racing out to a 22-10 lead after the first eight minutes of the game. Mansfield cut the lead to 29-28 four minutes later on a jumper by Terrance Williams.

The Mountaineers would take their first lead of the game on a dunk by freshman Brandon Smith giving them a 42-41 advantage with 2:15 to play and trailed 47-45 at halftime.

Mansfield would go on a 22-7 run over the first six minutes of the second half to take a 67-54 on a 3-pointer by Kevin Hill and managed to keep a double digit lead until the final seven minutes of the game.

Bowie tied the game at 94-94 on a free throw by Goodrich with 1:40 to go with Mansfield retaking the lead on a tip-in by freshman Jovoun Webb with 1:08 to play. Goodrich retied the game at 96-96 on a jumper with :49 left but John Hampton’s jumper with one second left just missed its mark sending the game into overtime.

Mansfield took a 100-96 lead on a tip-in by Brandon Lawley just under a minute into the first overtime before Bowie came back and took a 105-104 lead on a pair of free throws by Joshua Johnson.

Lawley then made the front end of two free throws with :23 remaining to tie the score. Mansfield got off two 3-pointers in the last 10 seconds but couldn’t get the ball to fall sending the game into its second overtime.

“We just ran out of steam after the first minute or so of the second overtime,” explain Miller who lost three players to fouls. “We lost guys to fouls and that changed some of the things we could do on the floor.”

Hill hit 10-17 shots from the floor including 9-14 on 3-point attempts to lead five Mountaineers in double figures. He also pulled down seven rebounds while playing 43 minutes. His 31 points were the most for a Mountaineer since Jason Benson scored 35 points against Edinboro in a PSAC playoff game in 2005.

Brandon Lawley had a season high 17 points and seven rebounds with John Hampton and Jovoun Webb each scoring 16 points. Webb also pulled down a team high eight rebounds and dished out six assists. Terrance Williams added 13 points.

Mansfield held a 48-42 rebound advantage and shot 46.7% from the floor including 52.6% (20-38) on 3-point attempts. It was the most points scored by a Mansfield team since a 117-103 win over Edinboro in a PSAC playoff game in 1997.

Goodrich, a transfer from Division I Lamar, played all 50 minutes hitting 18-30 from the field in recording his school record 52 points. Tyronne Beale added a double-double with 25 points and 15 rebounds.

Mansfield falls to 2-4 on the season and will be off for finals until traveling to the Wheeling Jesuit Classic on Dec. 29-30.
