RELEASE DATE: 1/21/06 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Martin Leads Mounties to 79-69 Win at West Chester – Mansfield in Three Way Tie for PSAC East Lead West Chester – Andrae Martin scored a career high 23 points to lead Mansfield to a 79-69 win over West Chester in a key PSAC East contest at Hollinger Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon. The victory was the first win for a Mountaineer team at Hollinger Fieldhouse since 1997 and vaulted them into a first place tie with Kutztown and East Stroudsburg in the PSAC East with a 2-0 record. “That’s a pretty good win for us,” said head coach Rich Miller. “Andrae just had a great game. He finished everything around the basketball and ran the floor hard. He just beat guys to the ball.” Although the Mountaineers never trailed in the game, it would never be a comfortable lead until the last minute of the game. Mansfield opened a 18-8 lead on a 3-pointer by Chris Greene eight minutes into the game but West Chester would chip away at the lead tying the game at 34-34 at halftime. The Mountaineers would make a number of runs in the second half, building leads by as much as eight points but West Chester always responded trailing just 62-61 with just over six minutes to play. Mansfield went on a 10-0 run over the next three minutes behind Martin and David Hoopes to build a 71-61 advantage with 2:41 to play and West Chester would never get closer than seven points. Surprisingly the Mountaineers got some clutch free throw shooting down the stretch hitting 6-of-8 over the final minute of play. “Although we played pretty well offensively,” said Miller. “The key to the game was how well we did defensively. We thought that if we could hold Williams and Butler in scoring we had a pretty good chance and Carlos (Collazo), Justin (Kress) and Andrae did a good job on them.” Martin connected on 9-of-10 from the floor and pulled down six rebounds. David Hoopes was deadly from the outside hitting six 3-pointers while scoring 22 points with five rebounds. Carlos Collazo had 14 points and John Hampton give the team a big boost off the bench with 10 points. Mark Gerhart led West Chester with 18 points with Aaron Williams and Donnell Butler each scoring 10. Williams also had a game high 10 rebounds. Mansfield improves 7-8 overall and 2-0 in the PSAC East. The Mountaineers will travel to Bloomsburg on Wednesday.
