FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Carlos Collazo scores 18 points as Mountaineers fall to nationally ranked Shippensburg in PSAC playoffs

WEST CHESTER – Carlos Collazo had 18 points and David Hoopes added 17, but the Mountaineers ended their 2005-2006 campaign Friday, falling to nationally ranked Shippensburg 72-65 in the PSAC semifinals, hosted by West Chester University in Hollinger Field House.

Shippensburg came into the game ranked 18th in the nation and fifth in the region. For Mansfield, it was their second straight appearance in the PSAC Final Four and the 15th  PSAC playoff berth.

“I told them in the locker room (after the game) that if someone would write a story about them this year, it would be about perseverance,” said first year head coach Rich Miller.

Miller was talking about the team’s performance, particularly the play of the seniors, over the last few years, but he may as well have been talking about Friday’s game.

The Mountaineers started off the game slow, as they could not get a shot to fall until the 14:30 mark of the first half when Collazo’s shot narrowed Shippensburg’s lead to 7-2. Hoopes followed that up with a steal, which he converted into a two pointer plus the free throw to convert the three point play.

The Mountaineers’ high point came soon after as they went on a 10-0 run to take the lead 17-11, which was sparked by a three-pointer by Brandon DeShields at the 10:35 mark. The Red Raiders managed to claw their way back and end the first half down only four with the score 37-33.

Unfortunately for the Mountaineers, the same three point shot that helped them take the lead and keep them in the game, ultimately led to their downfall. The Mountaineers got too impatient in the second half and tried in vain to get the three-pointers to fall.

“You hit a few threes and you fall in love with them. If you keep taking them, you shoot 7 for 25,” Miller said.

Shippensburg came out of the locker room hot and opened the second half on a 17-4 run of their own, taking a 50-41 lead at the 12:11 mark. Hoopes tried to reverse the fortunes of the Mountaineers when he hit a three-pointer at the 10:29 mark. He hit another trey at the 8:10 mark to tie the game at 53-53.

Nine seconds later, though, Shippensburg’s Malik Parker hit a pair of free throws and the Red Raiders would not look back. Key to the Shippensburg victory was a pair of three-pointers in the span of 33 seconds that gave Shippensburg the 61-54 lead, from which the Mountaineers could not recover. Mansfield only recorded 28 second half points.

Leading the way for Shippensburg was Chuck Davis, who had 23 points. His team advances to the PSAC championship Saturday.

With the loss, Mansfield end their season with a record of 14-14. Coach Miller said he is particularly proud of this team, which will lose five players to graduation. Hoopes, who has played for five years, has been a member of several successful teams. DeShields, who had 13 points in his final game, and Justin Kress have contributed for three years and Collazo and Andrae Martin, who had 10 points in his final game, graduate after playing two years for the Mountaineers.

“I am really proud of the seniors,” coach Miller said. “When you get to this game (the conference semifinals) you are doing something right.”

As for next year, the Mountaineers will likely be led by freshman Chris Greene, sophomore Kevin Hill, sophomore John Hampton, and junior Terrance Williams. In addition, coach Miller has five red-shirted players ready to go for next season.

“I am looking forward to having them next year,” Miller said.
