FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MILLER TIME STARTS WITH WIN AS MANSFIELD HOLDS ON FOR 85-82 WIN OVER KEYSTONE IN SEASON OPENER

MANSFIELD – Mansfield rallied from a five point halftime deficit to lead by as much as 18 points but needed three free throws over the last forty seconds of the game to hold off Keystone College 85-82 in the Mountaineers season opener and first game under head coach Rich Miller.

“It’s good when you get an education and still win,” said Miller after the game. “After we made our adjustments and took that big lead in the second half, I thought the game would be over with one or two more possession. We knew Keystone was a good team when we scheduled them and, now that we won, it’s good that we scheduled someone that tough to start. Of course I don’t know if I’d be saying that if we lost.”

After a close first half in which Mansfield trailed 39-34 at intermission, the Mountaineers made some serious halftime adjustments going on a 15-0 run over the first five minutes to take a 49-39 lead on a 3-pointer by Brandon DeShields at the 14:47 mark.

Mansfield keep a double digit lead for most of the rest of the second half increasing it to as much as 18 points on a DeShields layup for a 74-56 lead with 7:22 to go.

But Keystone went on a 16-4 run to over the last four minutes of the game to tie the game at 82-82 on a couple of free throws by Charles Edwards with :41 to go.

It would be the last points they would score with Mansfield making three trips to the free throw line where Carl Collazo hit 2-of-4 attempts to pull out the win.

Brandon DeShields led the Mountaineers in scoring with 23 points along with six assists and five rebounds. David Hoopes scored 17 points including four 3-pointers. Terrance Williams and Collaxo each added 12 points.

Andre Stone scored a game high 28 points for Keystone while Darnell Reed had 17 and Tunde Ogunleye 16.

The Mountaineers will host Messiah College on Saturday.
