Cheyney Hangs On for 98-88 Win Over Mounties -- Brandon DeShields Scores Game High 23 Points

Mansfield – Brandon DeShields scored a game high 23 points, but Mansfield was unable to overcome a 61 points second half performance by Cheyney in dropping a 98-88 PSAC East decision at Decker Gymnasium Saturday afternoon.

“We put ourselves in position to make a run in the end, but just couldn’t capitalize,” said head coach Rich Miller. “They are very athletic and that hampered our inside game.”

Cheyney’s athleticism showed itself early with the Wolves blocking eight of the Mountaineers first 14 shots. Still Mansfield led by as many as nine points early before Cheyney would go on a 19-6 run midway through the first half to take a 31-23 advantage with just under six minutes before halftime.

Mansfield would close out the half on a 10-3 run with the teams going into halftime tied at 37-37.

Freshman Chris Green hit two free throw two minutes into the second half to give Mansfield a 42-39 lead, but it would be the Mountaineers last lead of the game.

Leading 54-53 at the 13:22 mark, Cheyney went on an 11-2 run over the next three minutes before Mansfield closed to 71-70 on a layup by Carlos Collazo at the 7:07 mark.

But despite lose all five starters to fouls, Cheyney held on holding Mansfield to 3-9 shooting in a critical stretch late in the game.

DeShields, who scored 11 of Mansfield’s first 17 points, ended with a game high 23 points along with seven rebounds and four assists. Andrae Martin scored 20 points with David Hoopes adding 11 and Chris Greene 10.

Assad Brown came off the bench to lead five Cheyney players in double figures with 18 points with Jerron McCiskill scoring 15. Andre Logan and Bruce Lawrence each had 13 points with Husieen Edmonds 12.

Mansfield wraps up the first half of conference play in a three way tie for second place in the PSAC East with West Chester and Kutztown with a 4-2 mark. East Stroudsburg, which lost to Kutztown on Saturday, tops the PSAC East at 5-1.

The Mountaineers host Pitt-Johnstown in a non-conference contest on Monday evening at Decker Gymnasium starting at 7 p.m. before traveling to Millersville on Wednesday.
