FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MOUNTIES IMPROVE TO 2-0 WITH 90-78 OVER MESSIAH – BRANDON DeSHIELDS SCORES GAME HIGH 24 POINTS

MANSFIELD – Brandon DeShields scored 20 of his game high 24 points in the first half to lead six Mountaineers in double figures in a 90-78 win over Messiah College Saturday afternoon at Decker Gymnasium.

“We played a lot better today,” said head coach Rich Miller. “We moved the ball very well for most of the game and did a much better job of rebounding. Brandon was just incredible in the first half. Messiah is a very tough and disciplined team and without Brandon’s play in the first half, it could have been a different game.”

DeShields was a one man show for much of the first half scoring 20 of the Mountaineers 51 first half points. Trailing 28-27 at the 6:33 mark of the first half, DeShields scored five straight points giving Mansfield the lead for good as the Mountaineers outscored Messiah 12-4 over the final four minutes of the half.

Messiah cut the lead to 53-45  just over two minutes into the second half, but Mansfield answered with a 11-2 run taking a 64-47 lead on a jumper by freshman Chris Pender at the 13:19 mark.

The Mountaineers would increase the lead to as much as 20 points before Messiah to pull to 87-78 with 1:23 to play but couldn’t score after that giving the Mountaineers their second straight win of the young season.

DeShields did more that just shoot, pulling down eight rebounds and dishing out six assists with a block and steal.

Terrance Williams scored 15 points with four assists while David Hoopes and Carlos Collazo each had 11 points. Justin Kress recorded a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds while Pender also scored 10 points. Andrae Martin had a game high 12 rebounds.

Mansfield held a 52-37 rebounding advantage.

Jared Yoder led Messiah (2-2) with 20 points followed by Zack Wiernicki with 18 and Steve Young with 12.

Mansfield will host Ithaca on Thursday.
