RELEASE DATE: 12/3/05 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MOUNTIES TASTE FIRST DEFEAT AS EDINBORO RALLIES FOR LAST SECONDS 67-66 WIN EDINBORO – Daren Tielsch’s layup with six seconds remaining lifted Edinboro to a come-from-behind 67-66 win in a PSAC crossover contest at McComb Fieldhouse Saturday afternoon. It was a heartbreaking defeat for the Mountaineers who held a 40-27 halftime lead before suffering their first loss of the season to the same program that handed them a season ending loss in the PSAC playoffs last season. Trailing 7-6 just over three minutes into the game, the Mountaineers went on a 14-1 run over the next four minutes when Kevin Hill hit a 3-pointer for a 20-8 lead with 12:58 to play in the half. Mansfield would hold and increase that advantage, leading by as much as 15 points on a tip-in by Andrae Martin 25 seconds before intermission. The Mountaineer shot 46.7% in the first half while holding Edinboro to just 32.1%. But the second half would prove to be another story. Mansfield took a game high 16 point lead in the first minute of the second half when Martin stole the ball and took it in for a layup up and hit the ensuing free throw for a 43-27 lead. Torry Mitchell would score eight points in under two minutes to fuel an Edinboro rally that would cut the lead to 49-48 on a Mitchell layup with 13:37 to go. Mansfield would score just two field goals of the final nine minutes of the game. The final 10 minutes featured nine lead changes or ties with Mansfield taking a 66-63 lead on a layup by Martin with 2:19 to play. Edinboro closed to 66-65 on a jumper by Daren Tielsch with :49 to go and got the ball back off a Mountaineer miss with :17 remaining before Tielsch hit the winning layup. The Mountaineers Brandon DeShields got off a 3-pointer just before the buzzer but it was off the mark. Mansfield shot just 31.3% in the second half to Edinboro’s 53.6%. Martin scored a career best 15 points and pulled down eight rebounds to lead four Mountaineers in double figures. Carlos Collazo had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds while David Hoops and Kevin Hill added 10 points each. Tielsch recorded a double-double to lead Edinboro with a game high 21 points and 12 rebounds. Mitchell scored 18 points with Chris Ravello adding 12 and Justin Moore 11. It marked the first loss of the season for the Mountaineers who had opened the season with three straight wins. Edinboro is 4-1. Mansfield travels to Slippery Rock Sunday.
