FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: DAVID HOOPES AND JUSTIN KRESS LEAD THE MANSFIELD UNIVERSITY MEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM TO A 79-48 VICTORY OVER HOUGHTON COLLEGE IN THE 2004-05 SEASON OPENER

HOUGHTON, NY- David Hoopes (Philadelphia / Archbishop Carroll) scored a career high 18 points and Justin Kress (Jarrettsville, MD / Harford CC) added a double-double to lead Mansfield University to a 79-48 victory over Houghton College in the 2004-2005 season opener Tuesday evening at the Nielsen Center.

“It was really a great team effort tonight,” said head coach Vince Alexander, “David and Justin both got a chance to show what they could do tonight and hopefully we will see more of that as the season goes on.” 

The Mountaineers started the game with a 9-0 run over the first five minutes of the game, highlighted by back-to-back three-pointers by Hoopes.  Mansfield would extend its lead to 21-6 with 11:04 to go in the first half, with a lay-up in the first half by Jason Benson ( Pittsburgh , PA ), before taking a 36-22 lead in the half. 

A junior, Hoopes scored 10 of his game high 18 points in the first half in his first ever collegiate start.  The Mountaineers continued to control the game in the second half, increasing their lead to 56-36 on a lay-up by Brandon DeShields ( York , PA / York) midway through the half. 

Kress came off the bench to record his first ever double-double with career high 17 points and 10 rebounds.  He also blocked two shots and had two steals.  Mansfield had all 11 players score with Brian Bryant (Philadelphia, PA / Suffield Academy) adding 9 points and Benson and Terrance Williams Harrisburg, PA / Central Dauphin East) scoring eight points each.  Former Mansfield High School standout Kevin Hill (Mansfield/ Mansfield H.S.) scored three points with two rebounds in his first ever collegiate game. 

Mansfield held a 58-30 advantage in rebounds while recording 13 steals.  Kenny Gethers scored 12 points and Corky McMullen scored 11 points to lead Houghton College.  Former Elkland High School standout Harry Aldrich scored eight points. 

Mansfield will play Columbia Union at the Pitt-Johnstown Classic at 3:00 pm on Friday.
