RELEASE DATE: 1/03/05 MANSFIELD – Jason Benson (Pittsburgh/Schenley) has been named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Player of the Week for his record break effort over the Mountaineers last four games. Benson averaged 33.5 points and 6.5 rebounds per game during the four game span, connecting on a remarkable 60.5% (46-76) of his shots from the field. He also dished out 11 assists and recorded six steals. The senior shooting guard scored 22 or more points in all four games including a school record 53-point effort against West Virginia State at the Bowie State Tournament. He added 31 points the next night against Wilmington (DE) College. The 53 points broke the school record of 47 points set by Al Sander against UPJ in 1989. It also was the seventh most points scored in PSAC history and the most since Clarion’s Kwame Morton scored 56 points against Slippery Rock in 1994. Benson, who averaged just 10.0 points per game during the first five games of the season, is averaging 31.5 points per game over the last six games For the season, Benson is averaging 21.7 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. The Mountaineers are currently 5-6 on the season and travel to IUP and Lock Haven this Saturday and Sunday. |
