BOWIE, MD -- Jason Benson shattered the school single game scoring record, but it would not be enough as Mansfield went cold down in the stretch in a 103-97 loss to West Virginia State in the opening round of the Bowie State Tournament Tuesday night.

Benson put on a memorable performance hitting 19-of-26 shots from the floor including 6-8 three point attempts and 9-12 free throws to surpass Al Sander record of 47 points set against UPJ in 1989.

The Mountaineers lead much of the game including by 11 with six minutes to play but went cold down the stretch. David Hoopes added 14 points for Mansfield.
