FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: JASON BENSON SCORES 32 POINTS IN 89-60 WIN OVER SLIPPERY ROCK

MANSFIELD – Jason Benson scored a game high 32 points to lead Mansfield to a 89-60 win over Slippery Rock in a PSAC crossover contest Sunday afternoon at Decker Gymnasium.

“We knew Jason Benson would be an impact player and he showed that today,” said head coach Vince Alexander. “We have just been waiting for him to have this kind of performance and he is capable of doing that a whole lot more often.”

Mansfield got off to a slow start hitting just 32% of their shots in the first half. Still the Mountaineers managed to build a 39-34 halftime advantage mostly behind Benson’s 17 first half points.

The Mountaineers would put the game out of reach midway through the second half by going on a 15-0 run over a three minute span to take a 69-45 lead on a layup by Justin Kress with 8:05 to play.

Benson hit 10-19 from the field and all nine free throws while also pulling down eight rebounds. Terrance Williams had 13 points and Brian Bryant 10. Bryant just missed a double-double with nine assists. Carlos Collazo pulled down a team high 10 rebounds and added nine points.

Glenn Reepmeyer had a double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds for Slippery Rock (0-4).

Mansfield will host Houghton this Thursday evening.
