RELEASE DATE: 2/9/05 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MOUNITES REMAIN ALONE ATOP OF THE PSAC EAST WITH 85-72 VICTORY OVER MILLERSVILLE – JASON BENSON, CARLOS COLLAZO AND BRANDON DeSHIELDS ALL RECORD DOUBLE-DOUBLES MANSFIELD – Jason Benson, Carlos Collazo and Brandon DeShields each recorded double-doubles to lead Mansfield to a key 85-72 win over Millersville in a PSAC East contest at Decker Gymnasium Wednesday night. The win avenges a 85-68 loss at Millersville earlier this season and the Mountaineers only conference loss to date. “I know there are a lot of people out there who don’t believe we’re good enough to be in first place,” said head coach Vince Alexander. “But we do. And more importantly we believe in each other. This was a win by an unselfish team with just a lot of heart. We had three guys with double-doubles and that is something I don’t think I’ve ever seen.” With the game tied 29-29 after the first 15 minutes, the Mountaineers went on a 15-3 run to take a 44-32 advantage at the 2:08 mark of the first half on a layup by Brandon DeShields and held a 44-37 lead at intermission. Mansfield maintained a double digit lead for most of the second half, answering every Millersville challenge. The Mountaineers also played a tough defensive game limiting the top shooting team in the PSAC to just 36.8% from the field. “Our guards did a very good job tonight defensively and on the boards,” said Alexander. “They kept Testa under control because when he gets hot so does their defense.” Testa was held to 14 points shooting 4-16 from the floor after scoring 22 points in a 9-12 performance from the floor in the first game of the season. Guards Jason Benson and Brandon DeShields each had a double-doubles with Benson scoring a game high 23 points with 10 rebounds and DeShields adding 13 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Carlos Collazo led the Mountaineers inside with 13 points and 12 rebounds with guards David Hoopes and Terrance Williams each added 11 points. Toochi Udeinya led four Millersville players in double figures with 17 points. The victory extends MU’s winning streak to a PSAC best six games and keeps the Mountaineers atop of the PSAC East standings with a 6-1 conference mark and just as importantly gives Mansfield a win over each conference opponent this season with five games remaining. Mansfield travel to West Chester this Saturday.
