FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: HOOPES AND KRESS LEAD MOUNTIES TO 100-61 WIN OVER COLUMBIA UNION IN OPENING GAME OF UPJ CLASSIC – BENSON AND FREY ALSO SCORE IN DOUBLE FIGURES

JOHNSTOWN – David Hoopes and Justin Kress topped four Mountaineers in double figures to lead Mansfield to a 100-61 win over Columbia Union (MD) College in the opening game of the UJP Classic in the UPJ Sports Center Friday afternoon.

Hoopes was almost perfect in the first half where he scored 16 of his game high 23 points by connecting on 5-of-7 from the field including 4-of-6 3-point attempts. The junior guard has now scored 41 points in the first two games of the season after scoring 29 total points in his first two seasons.

The Mountaineers never trailed after the first minute of play and went on a 32-19 run over the final 12 minutes of the first half to take a 53-35 lead into intermission.

A 28-12 run over the first seven minutes of the second half gave Mansfield an insurmountable 83-47 lead.

Junior forward Justin Kress came off the bench to score 21 points and pull down seven rebounds with Jason Benson adding 18 points by hitting 8-of-12 from the floor. Jeremy Frey scored 11 points with five rebounds as 10 of 11 Mountaineer players scored.

It marked the first time the Mountaineers have hit the 100 point mark in a game since beating Holy Family 101-80 on Nov. 21 of last year.

Dwayne Williams and Corey Blythe each scored 10 points to lead Columbia Union (0-2).

The Mountaineer will face host Pitt-Johnstown tomorrow evening.
