FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MANSFIELD UNIVERSITY MOURNS THE LOSS OF FORMER FOOTBALL ASSISTANT COACH STEVE ZEGALIA

Former Mansfield University assistant football Steve Zegalia passed away suddenly on Wednesday, November 5, at the age of 55.

“We are all shocked and saddened to hear of Steve’s death,” said former head football coach Tom Elsasser. “Steve was an outstanding coach, but even a better human being. He was loved by his players and fellow coaches. His offensive linemen were the closest unit on our teams and their leader was Steve Zegalia. He was one of the finest human beings I have ever known. My heart, and those of everyone who every played or coached with him, goes out to his wife Anne.”

Zegalia served as a full-time assistant coach from 1985 through 1993. After initially coaching the linebackers, Zegalia took over the offensive line following the tragic death of Frank Butsko.

He excelled as the offensive line coach producing 12 All-Conference and two All-American selections before leaving coaching following the 1993 season.

Zegalia was an outstanding football player as a three-year starter at Syracuse University where he played in the 1966 Gator Bowl. In his senior season, Zegalia was honored by Syracuse as its Outstanding Student-Athlete-Citizen. Upon graduation, he received tryouts with teams in the NFL and CFL.

His wife – the former Anne Sellers – currently serves as the executive assistant to President Halstead.
