FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: DAN HOLLAND NAMED TO ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN DISTRICT II FOOTBALL TEAM – SENIOR ADVANCES TO NATIONAL BALLOT

MANSFIELD – Everyone already knows about Dan Holland’s exploits on the football field, now everyone knows about his exploits in the classroom.

Dan Holland (Scranton/Bishop O’Hara) was selected to the 2002 CoSIDA Verizon Academic All-American District II Football Team in voting conducted among District II sports information directors.

District II consists of student-athletes from NCAA Division II and Division III who have maintained a 3.25 or better cumulate grade point average while being key members of their football teams.

A senior, Holland carries a better than 3.40 cumulative grade point average in special education.

The District II region includes Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Student-athletes named to the district team qualify for the national ballot, with the team announced on December 1.

The 2002 NCAA Division II Linebacker of the Year, Holland was a consensus All-American last season when he led the nation in tackles and assisted tackles. A three time All-PSAC East first team selection, Holland currently leads the PSAC and ranks fourth in the nation in tackles (123) and third in solo tackles (71).

Holland is one of only two defense players among the 24 players nominated for the 2003 Harlon Hill Award. The Harlon Hill Award is annually presented to the best football player in NCAA Division II. The list will be cut down by regional voting to eight candidates on November 17. Voting will then be conducted among the top eight candidates with the top three invited to the Harlon Hill Award Ceremony held Dec. 6 – the evening before the NCAA Division II National Championship game at Florence, Alabama.
