FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MOUNTIES AARON FIACONNI PICKED IN 4TH ROUND OF
CFL DRAFT BY MONTREAL – FIFTH OVERALL LINEMAN SELECTED
MANSFIELD
– A dream came true for Mansfield University standout Aaron Fiaconni
(Saul St. Marie, ONT/St. Mary’s) today when the Montreal Alouettes
selected him in the 4th round of the Canadian Football League (CFL) draft.
“It’s
a real treat for me,” Fiacconi said. “You work hard all your life and just
dream of becoming a pro. Today, for me, that dream became a reality and I
couldn’t be happier.”
Fiacconi,
6-4, 300, was a three-year starter for the Mountaineers at offensive tackle
earning 1st Team All-PSAC East honors this season. Nominated for
All-American honors, Fiacconi recorded 73 pancake blocks and allowed no sacks
during the 2001 campaign.
“This
is a well deserved honor for Aaron,” said head coach Chris Woods. “He is a
great example of hard work paying off. Aaron’s a terrific person and
outstanding lineman who has made this football program and his family very proud
of him today.”
Fiacconi
was the sixth overall lineman and 32nd overall selection in the
draft. Two of the five offensive linemen draft ahead of him were Sherko
Haji-Rasovc and Brett Romberg of the National Champion Miami Hurricanes.
He
becomes the third Mountaineer drafted by the CFL. Running back Dean
Stewart was a fifth round selection of the Toronto Argonauts in 1992 and Jeff
Benoit was a seventh round selection of the Edmonton Eskimos in 1993.
Montreal
finished third in the CFL East Division with a 9-9 mark last season. Fiacconi is
expected to join the team for mini-camp on June 1.
