FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: TRAVIS MOTLEY THROWS WINNING TD PASS IN EAST COAST BOWL -- SENIOR LEADS NORTH SQUAD TO VICTORY
PETERSBURG, VA -- Travis
Motley wanted another shot.
The North quarterback had thrown a pass that Nelson Lee Johnson picked off five
yards from a go-ahead score, and if the South hung on to win Saturday's East
Coast Bowl, the loss would fall squarely on his shoulders.
Motley and the North squad got their chance at redemption with 2:17 left in
regulation when Dan Woodard blocked a field goal attempt.
The
Mansfield senior marched his team 74 yards down the field, hitting Hasan Jones
with a 5-yard touchdown pass with 20 seconds left to lead the North to a 30-26
win in the third rendition of the small college all-star game at Cameron Field.
"It was crazy," Motley said. "I had to redeem myself. I wanted one more chance, and I capitalized."
Motley threw four passes for 61 yards during the drive - including a 38-yard strike to Hampden-Sydney's Conrad Singh with 37 seconds left to put the ball on the 5-yard line.
"It was a big drive," said Singh, who owns Old Dominion Athletic Conference records for yards and receptions in a career." There was a lot of positives in the huddle. We were having fun and making plays."
Motley also gained nine yards on a keeper on fourth and three at the North 33-yard line.
"It was a little looser" than a regular season game, Motley said. "An all-star game you want to be fun. If it was the national championship game, you would have more mind blanks."
The South could have sealed the game on the interception with 6:12 left by Johnson, a Virginia Union senior and Zuni native.
The team moved to the North 25-yard line before stalling, setting up the Jonathan Clark kick that Woodard blocked.
The South got to the North 41-yard line with four seconds left, but Virginia State quarterback Kevin Jones' Hail Mary attempt was intercepted by James Lowe.
"We just came out and had fun," said Livingstone quarterback Joel Ward, who shared passing duties with Jones for the South. "I just wanted to show the people what I've got."
Among the people there were pro football scouts, looking for a possible diamond in the rough. 14 bowl participants have shown up on arena football 2 rosters, including five for the Richmond Speed and four for the Greensboro Prowlers. The Speed's Richard Jarvis (North) and Prowlers' Steven Jerry (South) were coaches in this year's game.
The North started by scoring 13 points in 20 seconds during the first quarter, with their offense still on the sidelines.
Erie Williams returned a punt 73 yards for a touchdown, and James Kostack grabbed a tipped Jones pass in mid-air and took it 26 yards to put the North up 13-0.
Nick Briley (VSU) scored the South's first touchdown on a 9-yard pass from Ward, and the team later rallied from down 16-7 to take its first lead of the game on a 2-yard run by Ward in the second quarter.
They then extended the edge to 26-17 when Jones hit Terry Meng for a 65-yard pass in the third quarter.
Singh scored on a 8-yard pass from Rodney Milbourne later in the third to start the North comeback.
