FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:  DAVID FETZER LEADS OFFENSE TO 20-15 VICTORY OVER DEFENSE IN THE ANNUAL RED AND BLACK GAME; CHRIS FARRIS 2004 BUTSKO AWARD WINNER

MANSFIELD-David Fetzer (Johnstown/Westmont Hilltop) threw for 58 yards which included a 16-yard touchdown pass to Joe Bennett (Horseheads, N.Y./Notre Dame) to help lead the offense to a 20-15 victory over the defense in the annual Red and Black spring football game Saturday afternoon at Karl Van Norman Field.

Close to 500 fans packed the stands to get a sneak peak of the 2004 Mountaineer football team.  Fetzer, along with Paul Garofalo (McKean/General McLane) who ran for 64 yards on nine carries, helped lead the offense to the win over the defense. 

Joe Bennett had three receptions for 48 yards which included a 16-yard touchdown reception.

On defense Jon Mattis (Halifax/Halifax) led the way with a game high seven tackles. Nick Roseberry (Edinboro/General McLane) recorded four tackles in the game.

Shane Hesser (Middletown/Middletown) and Ronnie Montgomery (Syracuse,N.Y./Corcoran) combined for five tackles and two interceptions with Hesser having a 18-yard return and Montgomery returning his for 21 yards. 

The game capped off a day where family, friends and alumni shared the experience of Mountaineer football.  Prior to the game the annual Hampton’s Dodge Chrysler Jeep/Frank Butsko Award Breakfast took place in North Manser dining hall.

The breakfast brought together former football players and current players along with alumni to reflect and celebrate last season as well as the legacy of Mountaineer football.

Junior Chris Farris was this year’s recipient of the 2004 Butsko Award. Farris, a three year starter on the offensive line for the Mountaineers was also named to the All-PSAC East second team in 2003.
