NCAA DIVISION II FOOTBALL SHIPPENSBURG 35 MANSFIELD 0 Freshmen Mike Gardier, Garrett Kensy and Kevon Calhoun Pace Mounties in Season Opening Loss to Shippensburg MANSFIELD – The Mansfield University defense played tough for three quarters before tiring in a 35-0 loss to Shippensburg University Saturday afternoon in the 6th annual Josh Palmer Pigskin Classic Saturday afternoon at Karl Van Norman Field. “You have to give our defense a great deal of credit,” said third-year head coach Jim Shiffer. “They we’re on the field a very long time and we’re able to keep us in the game for the first three quarters.” The defense played well, keeping Mansfield in the game for much of the afternoon until Shippensburg scored 21 points in the fourth quarter. It marked the first time the two programs had meet since 1987. After 30 days of camp, the Mansfield University Mountaineers had to wait an additional 20 minutes to start the 2006 when lighting delayed the opening kickoff by 20 minutes. The Mountaineers went three and out in their first possession of the season, and Shippensburg got good field possession at the Mansfield 44. Tim Devanney then capped off an eight-play drive with a 8-yard touchdown run. The young Mountaineer offense behind freshman quarterback Garrett Kinsy and freshman running back Kevon Calhoun struggled with Kinsy under pressure much of the game, especially in the first half. Shippensburg took a 14-0 led into half after Aaron Dykes scored on a four-yard capping off a 89-yard drive with a with a 4-yard run at the 6:05 mark of the second quarter. Reder kicked the extra point. The Mountaineer managed just 80 yards in total offense in the first half to Shippensburg’s 196. After a scoreless third quarter, Shippensburg put the game away with 21 points in the fourth quarter, including two 1-yard runs by Chris Infante. Dave Likerson capped off the scoring with an 8-yard run with 6:58 to play. Shippensburg amassed 419 yards in total offense while holding Mansfield to 133 yards. Freshman Kevon Calhoun led Mansfield with 50-yards on 12 rushes while freshman quarterback Garrett Kensy completed 8-of-27 yards while being sacked four times. “He’s competition numbers weren’t that great, by Garrett Kensy didn’t do badly for his first collegiate game,” said Shiffer. “Our offensive line missed some assignments’ that put him under a lot pressure especially early in the game. The line will get better and so will Kensy.” Red-shirt freshman Mike Gardier started his collegiate career with a game high 15 tackles for the Mountaineers while senior Andre Turner had nine tackles including two for a loss. Red-shirt freshman Tom Malinich recorded eight tackles including a sack while senior C.J. Okogeri had seven stops. Freshman Greg Hopkins and Joshua Miller also had seven tackles each. Senior Brandon Fields punted 11 times for 390 yards. Chris Infante led the Shippensburg offensive rushing for118-yards on 17 carries with quarterbacks Gabe Maiocco and Tony Gomez combining to complete 12-of-31 passes for 153 yards. Shippensburg improves to 1-1 while Mansfield falls to 0-1. Mansfield travel to Slippery Rock University next Saturday evening.
