COLLEGE FOOTBALL Lock Haven 24 Mansfield 21 LOCK HAVEN SCORES TWICE IN FINAL MINUTES TO RALLY FOR 24-21 WIN OVER MANSFIELD MANSFIELD – Heartbreaking. That’s the only way to describe the feeling on the Mansfield side of the field after Saturday’s Homecoming game with Lock Haven Lock Haven scored two touchdowns over the final 4:04 of the game to rally past Mansfield 24-21 for a heartbreaking loss during Mansfield’s Homecoming celebration at Karl Van Norman Field Saturday afternoon. “I really don’t have the words to describe the feeling of disappointment”, said head coach Jim Shiffer. “I know our kids played as hard as they possible could and they deserved a better result for their efforts.” Perry Smith scored from one-yard out with 1:02 to play to lead Lock Haven (1-3) to a capping off the furious come-from-behind win. Less than four minutes earlier It certainly seemed as if the Mountaineers had their first win of the season in hand when freshman Mike Gardier intercepted a pass and returned it 17 yards to the Mansfield 37-yard line Mansfield held a 21-10 lead with just over four minutes to go when Lock Haven’s Derek Harsch blocked a punt that was returned for a 43-yard touchdown by Jonathon Nalewak. The two-point conversion failed to cut the score to 21-16. After holding Mansfield to a three-and-out on the next series, Lock Haven took over on their own 24. On the first play of the series, Troy Wile, Jr. hauled in a 69-yard pass from quarterback Ilio DiPaolo to the Mansfield 7-yard line. Three plays later on a fourth-and-goal from the 1-yard Smith scored the winning touchdown. The Mountaineers had forced a fumble at the one-yard line the play before but Lock Haven was awarded the ball after the officials peeled players from the pile. Mansfield got the ball back and drove to the Lock Haven 41-yard line before Shane Barie intercepted a pass at the 25 with 28 seconds remaining. Mansfield lead for much of the game taking a 7-0 lead on a 6-yard touchdown run by Kevon Calhoun with :48 seconds remaining in the first quarter. Lock Haven cut the score to 7-3 at halftime on a 26-yard field goal by Marc Domonkos with :09 remaining in the second quarter. David Show game Lock Haven a 10-7 lead returning an interception for a 26-yard touchdown at the eight minute mark of the third quarter before Mansfield got the lead back when Andre Turner returned an interception 85-yards for a touchdown. “It hurts to lose like that,” said an exhausted Turner after the game. “It hurts real bad. But people have to remember how young we are. We will get better.” Senior quarterback Tyler Blakeslee gave Mansfield 21-10 lead on a one-yard touchdown plunge with 6:54 to play. DiPaolo completed 19-of-37 passes for 226-yards and was intercepted twice with Wile catching five passes for 99 yards. Blakeslee completed 10-of-21 passes for 103 yards but was intercepted three times in his first collegiate start. Freshman Tucker Barry also rushed for 76-yards on 19 carries for Mansfield while fellow freshman Kevon Calhoun rushed for 52-yards and a touchdown. Rodney Davis, Tyrone Robinson and Xavier Thomas each had three catches for a combined 87 yards. The defense play inspired all game holding Lock Haven to just 58 yards rushing and just one offensive touchdown. Andre Turner and Mike Gardier each had 10 tackles and an interception. Tuner also had a sack and two tackles for a loss. Freshmen Josh Miller and Greg Hopkins were credited with six and four tackles respectively. Mansfield opens the PSAC East season next Saturday when they host East Stroudsburg.
