Three incoming freshman that will join the Mountaineer football squad in just a few short weeks, have proved that they are ready to play football. Garret Kensy (Buffalo, NY/Maryvale), Justin Athans (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West), and Tremaine Young (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga), all from the Buffalo area, had impressive performances in the Kensington Lions Club All-Star Game along with Terry Mims (McKinley).

Garrett Kensy showed no signs of rust in the 31st annual Kensington Lions Club All-Star Game on Wednesday night.

Kensy, who broke his ankle in Maryvale's first regular-season game Sept. 9, had one rushing touchdown and two passes to the 1-yard line on his way to being named the Most Valuable Offensive Player for the South in its 23-0 win over North at Lancaster High School.

"This was my whole season," Kensy said. "That's the best way I can put it. I am happy I even got a chance to play in the game."

The combination of Kensy and Justin Athans (West Seneca West) at quarterback, both of whom are attending Mansfield University in the fall, accounted for nearly all of the South scoring in the game. The duo combined to go 14 for 24 through the air for 201 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

"We were looking at it before the game that those short passes were more like long handoffs for us," South and Eden head coach Doug Beetow said. "We didn't want to get into a power game with them, so we tried to get our receivers on the outside and use our speed."

The North was doomed by three lost fumbles and an interception, and it also had three other fumbles that it recovered. The North also was hit with untimely penalties.

"It's tough to recover from six fumbles," North and Williamsville North coach Michael Mammoliti said. "Penalties on second and third down kept us from building up momentum off of positive plays, and we just couldn't stop them on third down."

After a scoreless first quarter, Kensy connected on three passes to drive the South to the 1-yard line before taking the ball in himself with 13:51 left in the second quarter to give the South a 7-0 lead.

Athans led the South on its second scoring drive in the middle of the quarter, connecting on three short passes before hitting Cody Elliott (JFK) for a 58-yard touchdown pass to up the lead to 14-0, which was the score at halftime.

Kensy made the play of the game on South's first possession of the third quarter, scrambling to avoid pressure for several seconds before hitting Tremaine Young (Cheektowaga) for a 52-yard pass.

After Young, who also will attend Mansfield in the fall, was ruled out of bounds just outside the goal line, Brian Kelleher (West Seneca East) punched it into the end zone to make the score 20-0.

Adam Brophy (Lake Shore) connected on a 38-yard field goal with 3:16 to go in the quarter to round out the scoring.

Both Athans and Kensy will compete for time at quarterback with other incoming freshman, Brian Burke, Jacob Krantz, and Giles Ross, as well as senior Tyler Blakeslee. Blakeslee is the projected starter as he is the only quarterback on the roster with collegiate game experience. However the QB battle plays out, Mansfield is sure to gain talented depth at the position.

Athans, Kensy, and Young will report with the rest of the 2006 Mountaineer Football squad on August 9th to begin preseason camp. The Mountaineers kick off the 2006 season at home on September 9th against Shippensburg. The opener will serve as this season's Josh Palmer Pigskin Classic and is set for a 1:00pm kickoff at Van Norman Field.
