Mounties Fall to #20 IUP -- Rodney Davis Racks Up 233 All-Purpose Yards

Indiana, PA – Rodney Davis rushed for a game high 162 yards including an 80-yard touchdown but it would not be enough to stop the #20 ranked Indians of IUP as the Mounties fell 42-6 in PSAC crossover action on Saturday afternoon at Indiana.

The Mountaineers drastically changed their offensive approach entering the game, starting their fourth different quarterback of the season in freshman Xavier Thomas and starting Rodney Davis at running back. The sophomore had his own coming out party after entering the season with high expectations, rushing for a season high 162 yards including an 80-yard touchdown.

Davis compiled 233 all-purpose yards including 64 kickoff return yards and seven receiving yards. His 162 yards was the most rushing yards in a game since the opening game of the 2005 season when Poohbear McNeal rushed for 202 yards against West Virginia Wesleyan.

IUP got on the board first when Mike Reid returned a Mountaineer fumble 40 yards for a touchdown. They would score again on a Chris Morgan rush to lead 14-0 entering the second quarter.

Mansfield scored their only points of the game on one of the longest touchdown runs in school history when Davis busted an 80-yard score, the longest rushing TD since Lee Brannon's 85-yard run in 1998 against Bloomsburg. That score was the first time all season the Mounties have scored in the second quarter.

The 175 team rushing yards was a season high for Mansfield.

Turnovers would prove costly once again for the Mounties as IUP would return another fumble for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. The Mountaineers fumbled five times.

Xavier Thomas threw the ball just six times completing three passes for six yards.

Andre Turner led the defense for the sixth week in a row posting 9 total tackles. Josh Miller recorded 8 tackles while Troy Godinet wrapped in six and had a fumble recovery. Mike Gardier and Greg Hopkins each had five tackles with Hopkins recording the only interception of the game.

IUP's running back, Chris Morgan, was the eighth ranked rusher in all of NCAA Division II entering the contest. Morgan rushed for 122 yards on 11 carries for three touchdowns.

Mansfield falls to 0-8 overall on the season and remains on the road next week when they travel to West Chester for a 1:00 pm kickoff against the Golden Rams.
