FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: POOHBEAR SETS SCHOOL CAREER RUSHING RECORD – MOUNTIES DROP 63-20 DECISION AT WEST CHESTER

WEST CHESTER – Poohbear McNeal ran for 76 yards to become the Mansfield University all-time leading rusher, but the Mountaineers could not overcome a 49-6 first half deficit in dropping a 63-20 decision to West Chester in a PSAC East game at John Ferrell Stadium Saturday afternoon.

McNeal, who accounted for 191 all-purpose yards, surpassed Lee Brannon’s (1996-99) 3,268 yards with 3,281 midway through his junior season.

West Chester scored on its first offense play of the game on a 62 yard pass from quarterback Bill Zwaan to Mike Washington. They would go up 14-0 on their next possession when Brandon Simmons caught a 14 yard pass from Zwaan.

Zwaan would hook up with Washington again on the Golden Rams third possession of the game, this one going for 21-yards and took a 28-0 lead at the end of the first quarter on a 27 yard run by Brent Steinmetz.

West Chester opened the second quarter when Zwaan found Washington for the third time on a 30-yard scoring pass.

The Mountaineers got on the board at the 10:20 mark of the second quarter when sophomore Tyrone Robinson capped off a 50-yard drive by catching a six yard pass from freshman quarterback John Hengehold.

Simmons pulled in a 50 yard pass from Zwaan, who hit 6-of-8 passes for 186-yards for 186 yards and five touchdowns.

West Chester would only attempt one more pass over the last two and a half quarters of the game, scored its last touchdown of the first half on a five yard run by Brandon Hargrose.

The Golden Rams took a 56-6 lead early in the third quarter on a four-yard run by Hargrose before Rodney Davis scored for the Mountaineers on a 18 yard pass from Hengehold.

Ozzie Mathis caught a 15-yard pass from Hengehold less than a minute later following a West Chester turnover.

Hargrose would score the game’s final touchdown on a one yard run with just over ten minutes to play.

Hengehold completed 21-of-34 passes for 160 yards and three touchdowns with Mathis and Robinson each catching six passes for 55 and 39 yards respectively. Poohbear McNeal had five catches for 28 yards while Rodney Davis added three for 25 yards.

Brent Steinmetz gained 105 yards on five carries for West Chester which used 10 different runners to pound out 377 rushing yards.

Marc Hunsberger led the Mountaineer defense with nine tackles with Ryan Kassak and Keith Slezak each recording eight. Slezak also had an interception. Jason Zeigler and Jon Mattis were each credited with six tackles

Mansfield falls to 1-6 overall and 1-2 in the PSAC East while West Chester improves to 6-2 and 4-0 in the PSAC East.

Mansfield will host nationally ranked Bloomsburg next Saturday.
