RELEASE DATE: 10/02/05 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: LOCK HAVEN RUSHES PAST MOUNTIES 24-12 – POOHBEAR McNEAL BECOMES SECOND PLAYER IN SCHOOL HISTORY TO SURPASS 3,000 CAREER RUSHING YARDS MANSFIELD – Lock Haven pounded out 434 yards on the ground, 233 of them by John Kaluzny, to run past Mansfield 24-12 in a PSAC crossover game at Hubert Jack Stadium Saturday afternoon. “We’re just not a good enough team that we can turn the ball over four times and make other mental mistakes and expect to win,” said head coach Jim Shiffer. “Lock Haven didn’t do anything we didn’t prepare for in practice during the week, we just failed to execute and made too many mistakes.” The Mountaineer offense had 346 yards in total offense including 262 passing yards by freshman quarterback John Hengehold and 98 yards rushing by junior Poohbear McNeal who become just the second player in MU history to surpass the 3,000 yard career rushing milestone. He now has 3,032 yards and needs 237 to surpass Lee Brannon (1996-99) as the Mountaineers all-time rushing leader. But four Mountaineer turnovers, three lost fumbles and an interception, along with a surprising Lock Haven running game, spelled the difference in the game. Lock Haven, which came into the contest averaging a conference low 89.0 rushing yards per game over the first five games of the season, powered the ball mainly through the interior of the Mountaineer defense most of the afternoon. Using their ground control offense, the Bald Eagles did not attempt a punt during the game and the coaching staff claimed they ran the same play on 61 of 71 rushing attempts. The Mountaineers were missing defensive starters Brian Smith, Rob Smiley and Ronnie Montgomery. Turnovers would haunt Mansfield from the beginning. The Mountaineers took the opening kickoff and drove 41-yard in four plays before turning the ball over on a fumble at the Lock Haven 41 yard line. Lock Haven put together an 11 play, 59 yard drive, 54 of them on the ground, with Chelstan Anderson scoring from six yards out with 7:44 to play in the first quarter. Anderson would score again, this time for 31 yards out early in the second quarter to give the Bald Eagles a 14-0 lead. The Mountaineers cut the lead to 14-6 when Poohbear McNeal capped off a 13 play, 75 yard drive leaning over the goal line from four yards out with just under three minutes to go in the first half. Mansfield elected to go for a two-point conversion but the pass would fail. Things seemed to start to go in Mansfield’s favor when Taylor Ruddy stopped Lock Haven’s opening drive in the second half by intercepting the ball at the MU 21. But Tyrone Robinson had the ball knocked out of his hands after a 10-yard reception on the Mountaineers first play, giving Lock Haven the ball at the MU 35. Six plays later, Brian Tomasovich scored from four yards out increasing the lead to 21-6. The Mountaineers came right back on their next possession with Ozzie Mathis going up over the defender to pull down a 24-yard touchdown pass from Hengehold. Mansfield again tried for a two-point conversion but was stopped inches from the goal line. Lock Haven answered in its next possession with Danny Hagerman hitting a 31-yard field goal with under two minutes to go in the third quarter. Midway through the fourth quarter, the Mountaineers drove to the Lock Haven 20, but Hengehold was intercepted at the two yard line ending their last threat of the game. Hengehold completed 18-of-30 attempts for 262 yards and a touchdown while McNeal just missed his 17th career 100-yard game with 98 yards on 20 carries. Tyrone Robinson had five catches for 82 yards with Ozzie Mathis also pulling in five passes for 73 yards and a touchdown. Rodney Davis and Jeff Tanner each had three catches for 39 and 34 yards respectively while McNeal caught two passes for 34 yards. Senior Keith Slezak had an outstanding game, recording a game high 15 tackles while forcing and recovering a fumble. Junior linebacker Andre Turner had 11 tackles with Marc Hunsberger credited with 10 stops. Mansfield falls to 0-5 on the season while Lock Haven improves to 2-4. The Mountaineers will host Cheyney as the highlight of Mansfield’s Homecoming next Saturday.
