RELEASE DATE: 10/8/05 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: HENGEHOLD PASSES MOUNTIES PAST CHEYNEY 38-17 – POOHBEAR RUNS FOR 173 YARDS Mansfield 38 Cheyney 17 MANSFIELD – Freshman John Hengehold passed for 352 yards and five touchdowns to lead Mansfield to a 38-17 win over Cheyney in a PSAC East contest before 1,211 drenched Homecoming fans on a wet Karl Van Norman Field Saturday. “I happy for our players,” said head coach Jim Shiffer. “This kind of gets that monkey off our backs and they worked hard for it. John (Hengehold) has continued to show progress every game and today he found his receivers and got the ball into their hands.” Hengehold completed touchdown tosses of 60, 18, 20, 50 and six yards, hitting on 22 of 31 passes for a school freshman record of 352 passing yards. The five touchdown passes are the second most in a game in school history and the most passing yards for a freshman in school history. The 352 yards were also the most for a Mountaineer quarterback in a game since Travis Motley threw for 364 yards against Millersville in 2001. The Mountaineers recorded a season high 526 yard in total offense while the defense allowed a season low 378 yards to the Wolves. “It feels great to win,” said Hengehold. “Our line played outstanding today and they deserve all the credit in the world. They gave me the opportunity to find our receivers and those guys did a terrific job of catching the ball.” Sophomore Tyrone Robinson hauled in a 60-yard scoring pass from Hengehold to open the scoring with 7:03 to play in the first half. Rodney Davis caught a two-point pass from Hengehold to give Mansfield a 8-0 lead. Cheyney came right back on their next possession with Billy Mitchell capping off a 70 yard dive on a 1-yard run at the 3:27 mark of the first quarter. Cheyney would take a 14-8 lead when Jason Harris caught a 21 pass from quarterback Derrick Murry with 33 second remaining in the first quarter. Jeff Tanner put Mansfield back into the lead when he caught a 18 yard touchdown pass from Hengehold a minute and a half into the second quarter giving Mansfield a 15-14 advantage after Sean Hair extra point conversion. Cheyney would retake the lead on a 30-yard field goal by John Riley at the 9:29 mark of the second half before Ozzie Mathis caught a 20 yard touchdown from Hengehold and Rodney Davis a 50 yard touchdown pass over the last seven minutes of the first half to give Mansfield a 28-17 halftime advantage. After a scoreless third quarter, Sean Hair hit his first field goal the season from 29 yards out to give Mansfield a 31-17 lead before Poohbear McNeal went airborne on a touchdown catch from six yards out with 8:25 to play. McNeal rushed for 173 yards on 37 carries and combined for 258 all-purpose yards. McNeal, who recorded the 17th 100 yard game of his career, now has 3,205 career rushing yards and needs 64 yards to surpass all-time rushing leader Lee Brannon (1996-99, 3268). Rodney Davis had seven catches for 106 yards and a touchdown. Tanner had five catches for 89 yards while Robinson recorded four for 88 yards and Mathis three for 47 yards. Ryan Kassak led the defense with 11 tackles including nine solo. Andre Turner had 10 tackles with Marc Hunsburger nine. Jon Mattis and Taylor Ruddy each had an interception. Derrick Murry completed 14-of-35 passes for 243 yards and a touchdown for Cheyney with Dominique Curry pulling in five passes for 111 yards. Mansfield snaps a conference long nine game losing streak with the win to improve to 1-5 overall and 1-1 in the PSAC East. Cheyney falls to 2-4 overall and 0-3 in the PSAC East.
