FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: KUTZTOWN PULLS AWAY IN SECOND HALF FOR 45-18 WIN
OVER MANSFIELD IN PSAC EAST OPENER – FRESHMAN JOHN HENGEHOLD PASSES FOR 205
YARDS
MANSFIELD
– Kutztown scored 28 points in the second half to pull away from Mansfield,
45-18, in the PSAC East opener for both teams at Karl Van Norman Field Saturday
afternoon.
“We need to do a better job in every
phase of our game,” said Mountaineer head coach Jim Shiffer. “We
played flat with a lack of intensity for much of the game and that’s
disappointing coming off the great effort we made a Clarion at week ago.”
The Mountaineers kept it close in the
first half, but couldn’t contain a Kutztown offense that piled up 582 yards in
total offense including 366 of them on the ground.
Poohbear McNeal was a key
in the Mountaineers first two touchdowns, scoring on a one-yard plunge in the
first quarter and completing a 29-yard touchdown pass to Ozzie Mathis
on a halfback option in the third. The Mountaineers other score came on a
18-yard TD catch by Jeff Tanner from quarterback John Hengehold in
the fourth quarter.
Larry Baumgardner tied a school record
by catching touchdown passes of 5, 15, 7, and 19 yards from quarterback Kyle
Spotts while Maurice Adams and Tony Bria rushed for 143 and 102 yards
respectively to lead Kutztown.
Baumgardner opened the scoring by
catching a five-yard pass from Spotts to cap off a nine-play 85 yard drive just
over five minutes into the game and took a 7-0 lead after the extra point.
Mansfield answered back on their next
possession with Poohbear McNeal scoring on a 1-yard plunge. Mansfield missed the
extra point give Kutztown a 7-6 lead.
Matt Scartozi then hit a 30-yard field
goal for Kutztown with just 53 seconds remaining to increase the lead to 10-6.
It was Scortizi’s 20th field goal setting a new Kutztown career
record.
Kutztown would add another touchdown on
a 1-yard run by Tony Bria at the 11:59 mark of the second quarter to take a 17-6
lead at intermission.
Kutztown scored on its first two
possession of the second half when Bamgardner caught a 15 yard pass at the 11:28
mark of the third quarter and a seven yard pass at the 7:38 mark.
Mansfield scored late in the third
quarter when Ozzie Mathis pulled in a 29-yard pass from Poohbear McNeal on a
halfback option, but the two point conversion pass failed making the score at
31-12.
Baumgardner tied the school record with
his fourth touchdown reception of the game, this one for 10 yards six seconds
into the fourth quarter.
Mansfield’s scored on its next
possession when Jeff Tanner caught an 18 yard pass from Hengehold,
but again failed on the two point conversion to trail 38-18.
Kutztown scored the game’s final points
on a 65 yard run by Maurice Adams with 9:38 to play.
Hengehold, despite being under pressure
for a defense rush much of the second half, completed 14-of-29 passes for 205
yards and a touchdown while being intercepted once. Mansfield accounted for 275
yards though the air in the game with McNeal and quarterback Brandon Hunt
combining to go 2-for-2 for 70 yards. McNeal was held to 58 yards on the ground
in 22 attempts but moved past Dean Stewart (1989-92) into second place on the
all-time rushing list with 2,934 career rushing yards.
Freshman Rodney Davis had
four catches for 63 yards while McNeal also had four catches for 42 yards to
account for 129 all-purpose yards.
Defensively, the Mountaineers were led
by Ronnie Montgomery with 16 tackles and an interception. Senior
linebacker Jason Zeigler had 11 tackles including one for a loss
and forced a fumble. Fellow linebackers Andre Turner and
Marc Hunsberger had nine and eight tackles respectively while CJ
Okogeri had eight tackles, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble.
Mansfield falls to 0-4 overall and 0-1
in the PSAC East while Kutztown improves to 1-3 and 1-0 in the PSAC East.
