FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: #18 East Stroudsburg Rallies from 20-17 Halftime Deficit for 57-20 Win Over Mansfield -- Hengehold Passes for 282 Yards and Three Touchdowns – Poohbear Runs for 128 to Surpass 1,000 Yards On Season

East Stroudsburg – For 32 minutes, Mansfield University silenced the 2,765 fans at Eiler-Martin Field before #18 East Stroudsburg rallied to pull out a 57-20 win in the final PSAC East game for both teams at Eiler-Martin Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The Mountaineers stunned the playoff bound Warriors by taking a 20-7 lead with just over two minutes to play in the first half before East Stroudsburg scored 50 unanswered points.

Freshman quarterback John Hengehold continued his outstanding play, completing 23-of-35 passes for 282 and three touchdowns while Poohbear McNeal rushed for 128 yards on 31 carries.

East Stroudsburg opened the scoring when Anthony Carfagno capped off a 16-yard drive after an interception with a six-yard run just three minutes into the game.

But the Mountaineers scored five minutes later when Tyrone Robinson took a pass from Hengehold and outraced the defense for a 71-yard touchdown. The extra point was blocked giving ESU a 7-6 lead.

Ozzie Mathis would give the Mountaineers the lead, out-leaping the defender for a six-yard touchdown pass from Hengehold to cap off a 58 yard drive at the 9:28 mark of the second quarter. The two-point conversion failed giving Mansfield a 12-7 lead.

The Mountaineers then put together a nine play, 78 yard drive capped off with another six-yard touchdown pass from Hengehold to Mathis and McNeal ran in a two-point conversion to make the score 20-7.

But East Stroudsburg would come right back scoring 10 points over the final 1:50 of the half on a 11-yard touchdown catch by Carfango from Jim Terwilliger and a 29-yard field goal by Mark Brubaker with no time remaining to cut the lead to 20-17 at intermission.

East Stroudsburg would score on its first possession of the second half and outscore the Mountaineers 40-0 in the second half to record their eighth win of the season.

Mansfield had 418 yards in total offense, but gave up 546.

McNeal rushed for more than 100 yards in a game for the 19th time and passed the 1,000 yard mark on the season for the second time in his career. The junior now has 1,082 yards on the year with one game remaining.

Hengehold became the first freshman in school history to surpass the 2,300 yard mark in passing yards in a season with 2,303 yards. It is the sixth most passing yards in a season in school history. His 21 touchdown passes ties Bill Bair (1992) for the second most in school history. Travis Motley (2003) holds the record with 22.

Rodney Davis caught a season-high 10 passes for 64 yards, His now has 58 receptions on the season, third most in school history to Mark Doherty (61, 1994) and Duane MacDonald (60, 1989).

Mathis had seven catches for 80 yards including the two touchdowns while McNeal pulled in six passes for 39 yards.

Junior linebacker Andre Turner had 12 tackles including eight solo to lead the defense. Ronnie Montgomery was credited with six stops, all of them solo and Jon Mattis and Jason Zeigler five each.

Jim Terwilliger completed 14-of-23 passes for 334 yards and four touchdowns for East Stroudsburg. Evan Prall had six catches for 209 yards and a score.

Mansfield falls to 1-9 overall and 1-5 in the PSAC East. East Stroudsburg improves to 8-2 overall and 4-2 in the PSAC East.

The Mountaineers are one of the few non-playoff teams in NCAA Division II to play next week when they travel to nationally ranked NCAA Division I-AA Coastal Carolina.
