FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MOUNTIES DROP SEASON FINALE 41-7 TO EAST STROUDSBURG

MANSFIELD –  The Mansfield University football team saw the 2004 season end with a 41-7 loss to playoff bound East Stroudsburg before 1,116 fans in Senior Day Saturday afternoon at Karl Van Norman Field.

Seniors Luke Alex, Joe Bennett, Brian DeCecco, Chris Farris, Joe Frick, Ryan Geishauser, Drew Grieshober, Daricus Haynes, Lucas Ingersoll, Ryan McClellan, Corey Mishura, Mike Reed, Jason Twedt and Eddie Van Buren were all honored in pregame ceremonies.

Although the Mountaineer offense would have its second most productive game of the season it would not overcome ESU’s Jim Terwilliger threw for 373 yards including touchdowns of 22,22, and 60 yards.

Terwilliger, who completed 22-of-32 passes with one interception, connected for a 22-yard scoring toss to Tim Strenfel early in the first quarter before Mark Brubaker hit a 21-yard field goal five minutes later.

Evan Prall caught a 22-yard touchdown from Terwilliger to give East Stroudsburg a 17-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Anthony Carfagno put ESU up 24-0 at halftime of a two-yard run early in the second quarter.

Mansfield cut the lead to 24-7 early in the third quarter on Poohbear McNeal’s 28-yard touchdown reception from Donnie McDonough before Carfagno put the game out reach on a 15 yard run and 60 yard pass reception from Twilliger to close out the third quarter. Brubaker hit a 47-yard field goal to close out the scoring with under three minutes to play.

Poohbear McNeal ran for a game high 152 yards for Mansfield while also catching a 28-yard touchdown pass. McNeal, who only played in eight games, finished the season with 823 yards.

The Mountaineers lost their third quarterback this season to injury when starter David Fetzer left the game with a shoulder injury. He was replaced by Donnie McDonough who completed 4-of-9 passes for 97 yards and a touchdown in his first collegiate quarterback action.

Luke Straniere had one catch for 34 yards with Corey Mishura pulling down a 28 yard reception.

Andre Turner led the defense with nine tackles, eight of them solo, and an interception. Daricus Haynes added five stops and recovered a fumble while Joe Frick and Mike Reed had five solo tackles each.

Playoff bound East Stroudsburg ends the regular season with a 9-1 mark and 5-1 in the PSAC East. Mansfield ends its season with a 1-9 and 1-5 conference record.
