RELEASE DATE: 10/9/04 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: PAUL GAROFALO RUNS FOR 268 YARDS AND THREE TOUCHDOWNS IN 26-19 WIN OVER CHEYNEY – SOPHOMORE RUNS FOR SECOND MOST YARDS IN SCHOOL HISTORY CHEYNEY – It wasn’t easy and at times it wasn’t pretty, but thanks to a five foot, five inch backup running back, the Mansfield University football team earned its first win of the season.
It marks the first win of the season for the Mountaineers and first for first year head coach Jim Shiffer. “We overcame an awful lot of adversity today,” said Shiffer. “But in the fourth quarter when it counted the most, our guys refused to lose. The effort that Paul Garafalo gave us turned the game around.” Garofalo started in place of leading rusher Poohbear McNeal would was held out of the game because of a violation of team policy. Garafalo responded with the second most yards and carries in a single game in school history. He just missed McNeal’s record of 272 yards set in a win over Millersville last season and his 44 carries was just shy of Lee Brannon’s record 46 against Cheyney in 1999. Garofalo had rushed for just 30 yards on 19 carries in the first five games of the season. Cheyney opened the scoring by driving the length of the field to score on a five yard run by Billy Mitchell. However the extra-point attempt was blocked by Jason Zeigler and returned 80-yards for a defensive two-point conversion by Ronnie Montgomery to put the score at 6-2. Both team were plagued by turnovers and miscues in the first half with the only other scoring coming on a 29-yard field goal by the Mountaineers Sean Hair with 8:56 remaining in the second quarter. After a scoreless third quarter, the Mountaineers trailed 6-5 before Garofalo capped off a eight-play, 52-yard drive with a three-yard run. Quarterback Matt Hildebrand converted a two-point conversion to give Mansfield its first lead with 8:28 remaining in the game. The Mountaineers would increase the lead to 20-6 two and ˝ minutes later when Garofalo scored on a 16-yard run. It look as if Mansfield was on their way to victory, but 15 seconds later Brandon Roberts took the ensuing kickoff 90-yards for a touchdown to cut the lead to 20-12 after a two-point conversion attempt failed. Garofalo would then score his third touchdown of the quarter going 30-yards for a 26-12 lead with 4:16 to play But Cheyney would not lie down. The Wolves mounted a 10-play, 75 yard drive with Jamal Clark catching a 8 yard touchdown pass from Derrick Murray to pull Cheyney to 26-19 with 1:03 to play. The onside kick was recovered by Mansfield and the Mountaineers took knee to preserve the win. Garofalo’s performance carried the day for Mansfield as quarterback Matt Hildebrand struggled hitting just four of 17 passes for 62 yards with two interceptions. Joe Bennett had two catches for 37-yards while Tyrone Robinson had two for 25 yards. Daricus Haynes blocked two punts while Joe Frick had 10 tackles to lead the defense. Andre Turner added nine stops with Will Clarke credited with seven tackles and Mike Reed six. Ronnie Montgomery, Brian DeCecco and Keith Slezak each had five tackles.
