FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: MOUNTIES DEFEAT SLIPPERY ROCK 3-2

Mansfield-  Ashley Meta (Endwell, NY/Maine-Endwell) and Chelsea Phillips (Ephrata/Conestoga Valley) each scored first half goals to lead the Mansfield University field hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Slippery Rock University Saturday afternoon at Spaulding Field.

Minutes into the first half Meta scored the games first goal off a penalty corner to give the Mountaineers an early 1-0 lead.  Minutes later, Phillips connected on a goal to increase the lead to 2-0.

In the second half, the Mountaineers struck again this time off a penalty stroke converted by Kristen Campbell (Bloomsburg/Central Columbia) increasing the Mansfield lead to 3-0.

Slippery Rock responded with a goal by Laura Strano off a pass from Lara Winter with 25 minutes remaining in the second half.  The Rock would then cut the lead to 3-2 a minute later with a goal by Ashley Hanna.

As time expired in the second half, a penalty corner was called in Slippery Rock’s favor, however the Mountaineers cleared the ball and went on to win 3-2.

Mansfield improves to 3-9 overall and 3-6 in the PSAC.  The Mountaineers next game is Wednesday Oct. 6 at CW Post.
