FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Jarrett and Spangler Lead Mansfield to 5-3 win over Bryant – Mounties Remain Undefeated at 3-0 on the Season

MANSFIELD -- Keely Jarrett (Pennsburg/Upper Perkiomen) and Carlyn Spangler (Valley Center,CA/Valley Center) scored two goals apiece to lead #8 ranked Mansfield to a 5-3 victory over Bryant College Sunday afternoon at Spaulding Field.

It was the home opener for the Mountaineers who started the season with two road wins last week and marks the first time since 1999 Mansfield started off the season with three straight wins.

“We played very well at times today,” said head coach Diane Monkiewicz. “But there were also times when we fell into some mental and physical lapses and when we did they made us pay.”

It was a fast paced game from the start with the two teams combining for 36 shots including 23 by Mansfield.

Mansfield drew first blood just over four minutes into the game when senior Keely Jarrett beat goalie Kundayi Mawema on a penalty shot lifting the ball into the top left hand side of the net.

Bryant tied the score in the 20th minute when Kelly Frantz scored on an assist from Danielle Moody.

The Mountaineers came right back less than a minute later when Carlyn Spangler put in a deflection from Breanne Tobin (Perkasie/Pennridge) in front of the goal to give Mansfield a 2-1 advantage.

Jarrett scored her second goal of the game two minutes before the end of the first half on an assist by Ryanne Higgins  (Newton/Council Rock) off a corner to give Mansfield a 3-1 halftime lead.

Bryant would close the gap to 3-2 ten minutes into the second half when Caroline Carr scored from 12 yards out.

Five minutes later Spangler adder her second goal, this one off another assist from Tobin giving Mansfield a 4-2 advantage with just under 20 minutes to play.

But Bryant would not go away and pulled to 4-3 on Carr’s second goal of the game in the 59th minute.

Mansfield would finally put the game away for good when Higgins scored off a pass from Jarrett with just over a minute to play.

Mountaineer goalie Brianna DeLuca (West Grove/Avon Grove) was credited with seven saves while Bryant’s Kundayi Mawema had 12 saves on the day.

“It was a game we could never get comfortable with,” Monkiewicz said.  “It wasn’t a bad effort -- just not our best.  Will work on some things and be ready to go on Wednesday at Millersville.”

Mansfield improves to 3-0 on the season while Bryant falls to 1-2.

Mansfield opens the PSAC season when they travel to Millersville on Wednesday.
