FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Mounties Upset Bid of #1 Bloomsburg Falls Just Short in OT

MANSFIELD – In a game that was played with the intensity of a playoff contest and as physical as a heavyweight fight, Bloomsburg’s Maribeth Brozena scored off a penalty corner with 36-second remaining to overtime to lift #1 ranked Bloomsburg past upset minded Mansfield 3-2  PSAC East field hockey matchup Tuesday afternoon at Spaulding Field.

Mansfield set the tone that it was here to play when Ryanne Higgins scored off an assist by Breanne Tobin a minute and a half into the game.

Bloomsburg would tie the score six minutes later with Jamie Vanartsdalen scoring off a corner.

Mansfield retook the lead in the 22 minute of the first half with Tobin this time scoring a goal with an assist from Shana Markwis before Bloomsburg tied the game at 2-2 on a breakaway goal by Smantha Kropa seven minutes before the end of the half.

Both team battled emotional and physically in the second with a player on each team accessed with a yellow card before regulation play ended with the scored still tied at 1-1.

Mountaineer goalie Brianna DeLuca turned away three shots in OT before Brozena scored the winning goal.

Bloomsburg held a 22-13 shot advantage and a 19-14 edge in corners.  Tracey Hudak had four saves for Bloomsburg.
