FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- Mounties Drop First Ever PSAC Playoff Game 3-2 to #1 Team in the Nation From Bloomsburg -- Markwis Scores Historic First PSAC Playoff Goal

BLOOMSBURG -- The Mountaineer field hockey team put up a valiant fight under the lights against the #1 team in the nation on Friday evening in their first ever PSAC playoff appearance, but fell just short in the end dropping a 3-2 decision to undefeated Bloomsburg. The 3-2 loss was the second time this season that the Mounties have fallen by that score against the #1 ranked Huskies.

A tight defensive battle began the game with no early scoring. The Huskies would get on the board first when Ashley Heckard chipped in a goal at the 24:51 minute mark.

The Mountaineer women would not give in though, as they fought back to tie the game in the first half when Shana Markwis blasted a shot into the back of the goal with just under 5:00 minutes to play in the first half.

Bloomsburg would begin the second half with another score, when Maribeth Brozena converted on an assist from Chelsea Due in the third minute of the half. The Huskies continued their relentless play throughout the half. Heckard would add another score with just under 12:00 to play in the game to put Bloomsburg up 3-1.

The Mountaineer women would continue to battle. Ryanne Higgins would add the Mountaineer's second goal of the game on a blasted shot from just inside the circle with just under 3:00 minutes to go in the contest.

The Mounties would battle hard for the final 3:00 of the game but could not convert any scoring opportunities as the Huskies hung on for the 3-2 victory.

"I think what we showed tonight is that we earned the right to be here. For 60 minutes, we played even with the number 1 team in the nation on their home turf," said head coach Diane Monkiewicz. "I'm proud of what these girls have accomplished this season."

Brianna DeLuca stopped seven shots in the contest while the Mountaineer women were outshot 23-18 .

The Mountaineers close the season with an 11-10 overall record in a season that saw them ranked in the top ten in the Nation nearly every week of the fall season. The Mountaineers scored 61 goals on the season, setting a new school record for goals in a season. Brianna DeLuca recorded six shutouts this season, the most ever during a single season. Ryanne Higgins finished the season with 18 goals, placing her second all-time in single season goals while Breanne Tobin finished the season with 17 goals, tying her for third all-time.

11 regular season wins ties a school record for the Mounties as well.

Bloomsburg moves to 21-0 overall on the season and stays perfect at 15-0 against PSAC teams. They will face Shippensburg Saturday evening at 5:00pm in the PSAC Championship game.
