FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Multiple Records Fall as Mounties Shut-out Mercyhurst 6-0 in Final Regular Season Game

MANSFIELD -- The Mansfield University field hockey team continued their end of the season tear on Wednesday afternoon shutting out Mercyhurst 6-0 in a record setting performance for Brianna DeLuca and the 2006 Mountaineer Squad.

Brianna DeLuca picked up her sixth shutout of the season, making her the new all-time record holder for shutout's in a season. The record is impressive considering the last Mansfield shutout prior to the 2006 season came on October 23, 2003.

Ryanne Higgins added her second hat trick in as many games to move up to second on the all-time list for goals in a season with 17 thus far. Breanne Tobin added two goals of her own to tie Higgins for second on that list as well. They are tied with Liz Bruner who scored 17 goals during the 1984 season. Gretchen Reschke holds the record at 20 goals during the 1999 season.

The Mountaineers set team records as well, closing out the season with five straight wins for the longest winning streak since the 2001 season. The Mountaineers have score 59 goals this season, setting a new record for goals in a season breaking the record of 47 set in 1999. With the Mountaineers win Wednesday, they tie the school record for wins in the regular season at 11 wins, matching the 2001 squad.

The Mounties came out firing in the first minute as Breanne Tobin converted a goal on an assist from Ryanne Higgins to put the Mounties on top 1-0 at the 50 second mark. They would never look back.

Higgins would add three consecutive goals in the first half while Tobin added an assist to one of those goals and added a second goal of her own. Nicole Dann was also credited with an assist on one of Higgins' goals. Mansfield led 5-0 at the half.

Dann scored in the 51st minute on a deflected corner kick to put the Mounties on top 6-0. The goal was the second of the senior defender's career and comes in her final home game.

The Mountaineers close the 2006 regular season with a 11-9 overall record and advance to the PSAC playoffs for the first time in school history. They will play #1 seeded Bloomsburg on Friday, November 3rd at 4:00 at Bloomsburg.
