FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MOUNTAINEERS SCORE HUGE WIN, DOWNING #5 IUP 3-1

Mansfield -- Ryanne Higgins scored twice and Keely Jarrett added a goal and an assist to lead Mansfield to a 3-1 upset win over #5 ranked IUP Saturday at Spaulding Field.

“It certainly was a big win for our program and our players,” said head coach Diane Monkiewicz. “To have a win like this on Senior Day makes it even more special. Our players were a little embarrassed by the way they played against them recently and they were determined to make amends today.”

The win snaps a six-game losing streak against the Indians (11-5, 6-5 PSAC), during which Mansfield (6-10-0, 5-6-0 in the PSAC) was outscored 31-5. Mansfield last beat IUP Sept. 30, 2002 also by a score of 3-1.

“It’s just an awesome feeling,” said senior goalie Katie Heil. “It couldn’t be a more perfect way for the last home game of our career to end.”

A loud and boisterous crowd cheered on seniors Heil, Ashley Meta, and Holly Frederickson and the rest of the Mountaineers on a nearly perfect Saturday afternoon.

Jarrett’s goal gives her 12 on the season, tying her for the second most goals scored by a Mountaineer in school history and the most since Kristi Swartz scored 12 in 2002.

On Saturday at Mansfield, IUP started the scoring as Liz Martini scored on a corner from Suzanne Cornelissen at the 20 minute mark.

Mansfield quickly responded as Jarrett hit an unassisted goal off a rebound in the 22nd minute. The teams ended tied 1-1 at the half.

Less than a minute into the second half, the Mountaineers took the lead for good as Higgins scored an unassisted goal 17 seconds into the second half. Higgins would later bury her seventh goal of the season on an assist from Jarrett in the 65th minute.

The Mountaineers led IUP in shots 19-16.

Defensively, Heil recorded six saves and the rest of the team saved four more.

With the win, Mansfield extends their winning streak to three, the longest since the end of the 2002 campaign when Mansfield defeated Merrimack, Slippery Rock, and Southern Connecticut to close out the season.

Mansfield next travels to top-ranked Shippensburg for a 4 p.m. match on Tuesday.
